A unique institution stands as a beacon of hope for those seeking alternative approaches to healthcare. NCNM University (NCNMU), dedicated to education and healthcare since 1908, is at the forefront of Naprapathic Medicine. At its helm is a visionary leader whose journey from pharmacist to CEO embodies the very essence of perseverance and growth.

The story begins with a frozen shoulder and a serendipitous encounter in a nutrition class. Our CEO, Dr. Shante, then a Walgreens pharmacist, was simply looking to enhance her clinical practice. Little did she know that this path would lead her to become the driving force behind NCNMU’s expansion and the preservation of a century-old healing tradition.

The journey from pharmacist to CEO was not without its challenges. It required significant sacrifices, including a substantial pay cut and stepping into a role that initially couldn’t provide financial stability. Yet, the passion for Naprapathy and the belief in its potential drove our leader forward.

This determination has been the cornerstone of NCNMU’s growth strategy. The university now offers a comprehensive Doctor of Naprapathy program, alongside Pre-Naprapathy, Naprapathic Assistant, and Massage Therapy programs. Plans are underway to include Athletic Trainer certifications, further expanding the institution’s reach and impact.

But growth isn’t just about expanding programs. It’s about nurturing a vision and having the courage to act on inspiration. One of the biggest lessons our CEO learned was the importance of timely action. “Hesitating and letting others downplay my ideas wasted valuable time,” she admits. “Now, I trust my instincts, take action, and don’t wait for validation.”

This proactive approach has been crucial in navigating the challenges of leading a growing institution. Financial constraints often prevented hiring professionals, but determination brought help and funding. Each obstacle became an opportunity for learning and growth, fueling the CEO’s confidence and belief in herself.

Dr. Shante’s personal experiences have significantly shaped her professional journey and research interests. Inspired by her own challenges with back pain during pregnancy, she focused her doctoral thesis on “Treatment of Lower Back Pain During Pregnancy: The Application of Naprapathic Medicine in Treating Hyperlordosis & Muscle Spasm.” This research, combined with limited available data, has motivated her to advocate for more evidence-based research on the application of Naprapathic Medicine as a complementary treatment in various areas, including pain management, fertility, prenatal, and postpartum care.

Her experiences have also led to an upcoming book series titled “Mommy Hurts.” In this series, Dr. Shante shares her personal journey through miscarriage, recurrent pregnancy loss, child loss, divorce, and single parenthood. The books aim to provide coping mechanisms, encourage healing, and offer inspiration and hope to millions of women globally.

For aspiring entrepreneurs and business leaders, Dr. Shante’s journey offers valuable insights. Embrace continuous learning and adaptability. Build a network of experienced professionals who can provide guidance and support. Most importantly, remain passionate and committed to your vision, no matter the ups and downs.

As NCNMU continues to grow, the focus remains on expanding naprapathy-inspired allied healthcare nationally and internationally. The institution faces challenges, particularly in marketing and public relations due to financial constraints. However, the unwavering commitment to the field and the growing interest in Naprapathy fuel the optimism for the future.

It’s worth noting that Naprapathy was founded by Oakley Smith on November 16, 1905. In recognition of this, the American Naprapathic Association has declared November 16th as National Naprapath Day. Additionally, November is American Naprapathy Month, during which NCNMU will celebrate over 116 years of Naprapathy. This milestone is not just a celebration of the past but a testament to the enduring relevance and growing importance of this field in modern healthcare.

Dr. Shante’s vision extends beyond just running a successful institution. From a frozen shoulder to leading a university, this journey exemplifies the essence of business growth and longevity. It’s a story of turning challenges into opportunities, of staying true to one’s vision, and of the profound impact one can have when driven by passion and purpose.
