La’Deana Hilley has spent 27 years in real estate, 26 of them as a self-made, self-sponsoring managing broker serving the greater Chicago area. Her path into the industry did not begin with property at all. It began in cosmetology, her first professional career, where she learned what it means to serve people well. That early lesson never left her. After her first year in real estate, she went back to school to become a managing broker, choosing to build her business on her own terms. In the years since, she has represented buyers, sellers, and investors across both residential and commercial sales, built homes, developed an expertise in rehabbing properties, and earned her certification as a short sale agent. Through all of it, her approach has stayed the same. She treats people the way she wants to be treated, a value instilled in her by her mother, Linda Hilley, a travel agent whose motto was that no matter how much money you think you do not have, you deserve to travel and see the world. For La’Deana, real estate carries the same kind of belief. She is about making people happy and showing them that dreams do come true.

Choosing Her Own Path

After her first year in the business, La’Deana made a decision that shaped everything that followed. She returned to real estate school and became a managing broker. She could have spent her career overseeing other agents, but selling was where her heart was. “I love selling so much, I decided to work on my own instead of managing others,” she explained. That independence has defined her ever since, and the range of her experience reflects it. She believes her uniqueness comes from a plethora of experiences in real estate, and that she represents what the work truly entails.

Meeting Clients Where They Are

Every client comes with their own challenges, and La’Deana has learned to slow down when the situation calls for it. She has worked with buyers whose credit made it hard to get approved at a good rate. Rather than pushing forward, she teams up with one of her mortgage lenders and, when possible, pauses the search until the hindering issues are resolved. Most of the time, those buyers end up able to afford their desired location or bid on a better home at a better rate. “It’s not always about getting a sale right now,” she said. On the selling side, she educates her sellers on what buyers are expecting so they can get the highest amount out of their home. The result, as she puts it, is a win-win for all parties involved.

A Second Chance Through Short Sales

Some of the work closest to her heart involves homeowners who have fallen behind on their mortgage payments because life has happened. It is the reason she became a short sale agent. Instead of facing foreclosure, her clients can have peace of mind and stop struggling to pay a mortgage they can no longer manage. She points out something many people do not realize. After a short sale, a person can own again in five years, while a foreclosure takes much longer. For someone who needs a reset after the loss of a job or a loved one, that difference matters. It gives them a real chance at a do-over once their finances recover.

Staying Connected to the Market

La’Deana stays informed about grants and the financial offerings that the government and banks make available, so her clients do not miss opportunities that could help them. She is also excited about her reconnection with real estate investors. That network helps her find off-market deals for her buyers, and it works the other way too, connecting her investors with properties that fit what they are looking for. She is always on the lookout for a better deal to present to the greater land of Chicago.

A Career Milestone Worth Cherishing

She recently closed the biggest sale of her career, a property purchased by a first-time buyer making their first investment purchase. She calls it a proud moment she will continue to cherish, and the story did not end at closing. The buyer then trusted her to fill a vacant unit, and she did it within the first week. Recognition has followed the work. She received an award of excellence in client services from Homesnap, now known as homes.com, and for the second year in a row, Business Rate has sent her a congratulatory letter naming her the top real estate agent on the far southeast side for 2026, based on Google reviews. Those reviews come from clients, which is why they matter to her. After 27 years, La’Deana is still doing what her mother taught her, helping people, one home at a time.
