Joshua Daniel Pratt of Lynchburg, VA, has spent more than three decades leading organizations, building businesses, serving churches, and investing in communities through a philosophy grounded in stewardship, compassion, and practical service. Alongside his wife, Sarah Jane Pratt of Lynchburg, VA, that commitment is now reflected in the developing vision for Blue Ridge Haven, a planned residential and life-skills community for adults with Autism in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains that will also provide retreat, respite, and practical support for individuals and families impacted by Autism.

Blue Ridge Haven is being developed as far more than a peaceful retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The vision is to create a lasting, faith-centered community of respite, belonging, purpose, and practical support for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities, their families and caregivers, as well as churches and nonprofit organizations. Blue Ridge Haven will provide opportunities for rest and renewal, life-skills development, meaningful work, recreation, community connection, and supportive relationships. The central desire is to create a place where individuals and families, many of whom quietly carry responsibilities and challenges others may never fully see, can be encouraged, strengthened, welcomed, and reminded that they belong.

For Joshua and Sarah Pratt, Blue Ridge Haven represents the convergence of personal conviction, ministry experience, business leadership, and a long-standing desire to serve families affected by autism. Rather than focusing only on temporary support, the project seeks to establish a community where hope, daily rhythm, life skills, faith, work, and relationships come together in a way that strengthens both individuals and families.

Recognizing the Growing Need for Autism Support

Families caring for loved ones with autism or developmental disabilities often demonstrate extraordinary resilience. Daily life may include therapy appointments, educational planning, healthcare coordination, advocacy, behavioral support, transportation needs, employment concerns, and constant caregiving responsibilities. While these families often celebrate milestones that others may overlook, they also carry emotional, physical, and financial demands that can be difficult to sustain without encouragement and support.

Caregiver burnout has become an increasingly important concern as more parents and families seek places where they can rest, regroup, and connect with others who understand their experiences. Many parents place the needs of their children or adult loved ones before their own for years, often with limited access to meaningful respite, trusted support systems, or communities that understand the long-term realities of autism and developmental disabilities.

For Joshua Pratt, years of ministry, business, and community leadership have reinforced the importance of serving the whole family, not only the individual with a diagnosis. Healthy communities grow stronger when caregivers are encouraged, adults with autism are valued, and families are surrounded by people who understand both the challenges and the beauty of the journey.

Blue Ridge Haven is being developed with that understanding at its foundation. The vision recognizes that autism support extends beyond clinical services. Families also need places where they can slow down, build friendships, exchange experiences, develop trust, and discover renewed strength for the road ahead.

More Than a Family Retreat

Blue Ridge Haven is envisioned as far more than a traditional retreat. The project combines the restorative setting of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains with opportunities for life-skills development, faith-centered hospitality, family connection, community engagement, and long-term residential support for adults with autism.

Families visiting Blue Ridge Haven would have opportunities to rest and recharge while enjoying peaceful natural surroundings. Parents and caregivers could experience meaningful respite and encouragement, knowing they are surrounded by people who understand the realities of raising children or supporting adults with autism and developmental disabilities. Individuals with autism could participate in activities designed to encourage confidence, independence, healthy routines, social development, and personal growth within a welcoming environment.

A central part of the Blue Ridge Haven vision is the creation of a planned residential community where adults with autism can live, work, grow, and belong. Rather than viewing adults with autism only through the lens of care, Blue Ridge Haven seeks to recognize their gifts, abilities, routines, interests, personalities, and desire for meaningful purpose. The long-term vision is to provide more than services. It is to help create a home, a job, a rhythm of life, and a place of belonging.

The vision also includes serving churches and nonprofit organizations that support special needs families. Blue Ridge Haven seeks to become a place where partnerships flourish and organizations can strengthen their efforts through collaboration, shared learning, retreat opportunities, and volunteer engagement.

Building Community Through Shared Experience

One of the greatest gifts families can receive is knowing they are not alone. Parents managing autism, developmental disabilities, and long-term caregiving often discover that conversations with others who understand their experiences provide reassurance that cannot be found elsewhere.

Blue Ridge Haven embraces the importance of community by creating opportunities for authentic connection. Families can build lasting friendships while sharing ideas, celebrating milestones, and encouraging one another through both victories and challenges. Those relationships have the potential to continue long after families return home.

The atmosphere envisioned for Blue Ridge Haven is intentionally welcoming and inclusive. Individuals with autism and developmental disabilities deserve environments where they are valued for who they are rather than defined by their diagnoses. Caregivers deserve places where they can experience encouragement without judgment. Adults with autism deserve the opportunity to be part of a community where their lives have daily purpose, meaningful relationships, and visible contribution.

Throughout his career, Joshua has approached leadership through the lens of servant leadership, the belief that leadership is not primarily about position, recognition, or authority, but about responsibility, stewardship, and serving others well. Across ministry, construction, business, consulting, transportation, entrepreneurship, and community service, he has sought to bring people together, strengthen relationships, solve problems, and help others move forward.

A guiding principle throughout that journey has been simple. “Just do the next right thing.” Rather than waiting until every answer is known or every obstacle has been removed, Joshua believes meaningful change often begins by recognizing the need at hand and faithfully taking the next responsible step.

Blue Ridge Haven grows from that same philosophy. It is an effort to respond to real needs facing individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities, their families, and caregivers by building something practical, sustainable, and deeply relational, a community where people can find support, belonging, purpose, hope, and greater security for the future.

Faith Expressed Through Practical Service

Joshua Pratt serves as a bi-vocational pastor at All Nations Community Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, and his ministry experience has deeply influenced the vision behind Blue Ridge Haven. His understanding of leadership is rooted in Christian stewardship, compassion, integrity, and practical service rather than titles or recognition.

That perspective shapes Blue Ridge Haven in ways that remain welcoming to every family it serves. Faith is expressed through hospitality, encouragement, kindness, patience, dignity, and a commitment to meeting real needs. The focus is not on creating a theological destination, but on fostering a faith-centered community where service becomes tangible through everyday actions.

For Joshua, leadership has always involved helping people discover hope while providing practical resources that improve lives. Building organizations, mentoring leaders, supporting churches, serving local communities, and encouraging families have all reflected this same philosophy. As Pastor Joshua has often expressed, “When you just do the next right thing, servant leadership wins.”

Blue Ridge Haven carries that mission forward by seeking to offer a place where faith and compassion work together to strengthen autism families, encourage caregivers, and support adults with autism.

A Planned Residential Community for Adults with Autism

One of the most important parts of the Blue Ridge Haven vision is the long-term residential community for adults with autism. Many families affected by autism face a difficult and emotional question. What will happen when parents can no longer provide the same level of care, supervision, advocacy, and support?

Blue Ridge Haven seeks to help address that concern by developing a model where adults with autism can have a safe, structured, and purpose-filled place to live. The vision is not institutional. It is relational, community-based, and rooted in dignity. The goal is to create a place that feels like home while also providing structure, support, meaningful work, and opportunities for personal growth.

The planned residential model would include supportive housing, trained residential staff, life-skills instructors, vocational mentors, and behavioral support partnerships. Residents would be encouraged to participate in the life and work of the community according to their abilities. Some may thrive helping with animals, gardens, and grounds. Others may enjoy food service, hospitality, housekeeping, laundry, creative work, office support, maintenance tasks, or assisting with retreat preparation. Each opportunity would be designed around the individual’s strengths, interests, needs, and capacity.

This approach reflects a simple but powerful belief. Adults with autism need more than supervision. They need belonging. They need purpose. They need meaningful work. They need trusted relationships. They need a place where they can be part of something larger than themselves.

Blue Ridge Haven is being envisioned as a place where adults with autism can wake up with a rhythm, contribute to a community, develop life skills, participate in meaningful work, and experience the dignity of being needed. For families, that kind of vision offers more than temporary relief. It offers hope for the future.

A Long-Term Vision for Virginia and Beyond

Meaningful community impact is rarely created overnight. Lasting initiatives require vision, patience, thoughtful planning, wise partnerships, and consistent leadership. Blue Ridge Haven reflects that long-term approach.

Rather than serving as a short-term project, the goal is to establish a resource that continues benefiting families across Virginia and beyond for generations. As awareness surrounding autism and developmental disabilities continues to grow, the need for supportive environments that combine respite, fellowship, residential support, life-skills development, vocational opportunity, and faith-centered encouragement becomes increasingly important.

As a community leader and pastor, Rev. Joshua Daniel Pratt, MDiv., sees the vision expanding through partnerships with churches, nonprofit organizations, volunteers, donors, community leaders, and families who share a commitment to serving adults with autism and special needs families. Working together creates opportunities that extend well beyond a single location, strengthening communities through collaboration and shared purpose.

The project also reflects a belief that supporting caregivers ultimately benefits everyone. Parents who receive rest and encouragement return home better equipped to continue providing loving care. Adults with autism who receive structure, purpose, and meaningful work gain opportunities to develop confidence, independence, and relationships. Churches and nonprofit organizations gain a place where their mission of service can be lived out in practical ways.

Leadership That Leaves a Lasting Legacy

Throughout more than thirty years of leadership, Joshua Pratt has consistently focused on building organizations, developing leaders, strengthening communities, and serving others through faith and practical action. His background in business, construction, consulting, entrepreneurship, transportation, organizational leadership, and ministry has provided a broad perspective on what it takes to create initiatives that endure.

Blue Ridge Haven represents the convergence of those experiences. It is a vision centered on adults with autism, autism families, caregiver wellness, residential support, community leadership, Christian stewardship, and lasting family impact. Rather than simply responding to immediate needs, it seeks to create a place where hope becomes part of everyday life through relationships, work, encouragement, structure, and meaningful service.

As Blue Ridge Haven moves from vision toward reality, Joshua Daniel and Sarah Jane Pratt of Lynchburg, VA, continue to demonstrate that compassionate leadership is measured by the opportunities it creates for others. By investing in families, supporting adults with autism, and encouraging churches and nonprofit organizations, they are working toward a future where service leaves a legacy that extends well beyond one generation.

The enduring value of Blue Ridge Haven lies not only in the retreat it seeks to become, but in the community it hopes to cultivate. The vision reflects the belief that when people are cared for, encouraged, connected, and given purpose, entire communities become stronger.
