Karis Crawford has spent her life close to the land and close to the people who live on it. She works in Abilene, Texas, where she serves buyers and sellers as a REALTOR® and a Certified Residential Appraiser. That combination is rare, and it shapes the way she approaches every home she walks into.

Her story does not begin in an office. It begins on a cotton farm in Midland, where her family raised roughly 50 head of cattle and kept as many as eight horses at a time. She grew up working, learning early what it meant to earn something and hold onto it. Long before she held a license or a title, she was moving water lines through cotton and alfalfa fields and saving money from the livestock she showed.

That early sense of responsibility never left her. It runs through the way she values property, talks with clients, and measures a home down to the last detail. What follows is a look at how a girl from a Midland farm built a career grounded in honesty, patience, and a steady respect for the work itself.

A Childhood Built on Work

Karis started barrel racing at eight years old. She bought her first horse with money earned selling lambs, heifers, and steers she raised and showed through 4H. That was her introduction to earning her own way, and it stuck.

The ranching life gave her more than a hobby; it instilled a work ethic she carried into everything that came after. She spent her days on the family farm, managing irrigation lines across the fields and learning that nothing came without effort. Those years taught her patience and consistency, two traits that would later shape how she handled clients and read the value of a home.

Buying Her First Home at Sixteen

At sixteen, Karis did something most adults never attempt. She bought her first home for $32,000 after convincing a local Midland banker to take a chance on her. She rented the property to cover the mortgage while she finished high school.

It was a quiet lesson in real estate long before she ever thought of it as a career. She did not stop there. She later bought two more rental homes on the same 32-acre tract and paid off that first property in seven and a half years. The experience gave her an understanding of ownership, risk, and responsibility from the inside out.

From Geology to Real Estate

After high school, Karis attended the University of Texas Permian Basin in Odessa, where she studied Geology. She worked as a Landman for HNG Energy and later as a Production Manager for Ford Chapman, whose historic cable tool drilling rigs are still on display at the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum.

In 1987, she and her husband, Dennis, moved to Abilene when the Caterpillar Dealership transferred him from Midland. They raised their two children there, both of whom attended Wylie schools. By 1988, Karis had earned her real estate license. Her path was not a straight line, but every step added to her deep understanding of land and value.

A Career Measured in Detail

By 1993, Karis had also become a Certified Residential Appraiser, and in 1994, she took a role as a loan officer for Dyess Federal Credit Union in Mortgage Loans. In 2000, Dennis earned his own appraiser certification, and the two built their appraisal business together. They still measure properties side by side to keep every assignment accurate.

In 2015, Karis was named Appraiser of the Year by the Association of Texas Appraisers, the same year Dennis served as its President. Both continue to serve on committees, and Karis was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the Association of Texas Appraisers. Karis has also taught agents through the Texas Association of REALTORS®, showing them how to study comparable sales and build a Comparative Market Analysis from an appraiser’s point of view.

The Team Behind the Work

Karis works alongside a broad network of professionals across Texas. On the real estate side, her transactions are fully supported by her Assistant and Transaction Coordinator, Taylor Christensen.

Taylor brings more than 20 years of industry experience across various roles, including Inside Sales Agent, Office Manager, and Real Estate Assistant, helping move hundreds of transactions successfully to the finish line. Known for careful attention to detail and steady communication, Taylor handles contract compliance, client relations, marketing, and coordination so that the real estate side stays seamlessly organized behind the scenes.

Together on real estate transactions, Karis and Taylor offer clients honest guidance and steady representation. Ultimately, whether someone is buying, selling, or seeking an appraisal from Karis and Dennis, the core philosophy remains unchanged: do the work right, and earn the trust that comes with it.
