By: Jeff Mahony, CEO, NEFT Vodka
Vodka has long been a staple in the spirits world – versatile, ubiquitous, and often, designed to be unremarkable. However, as consumer preferences shift toward more distinct character, craftsmanship, and meaningful stories, vodka is experiencing a gradual transformation, and NEFT Vodka is positioned as a part of this evolution. Known for its sleek, barrel-shaped packaging and Austrian origin, NEFT Vodka is crafted from a deceptively simple blend: non-GMO rye, mineral-rich Alpine spring water, and a philosophy that vodka deserves attention akin to any other premium spirit. Leading the brand is Jeff Mahony, NEFT’s CEO, who is guiding the company through a competitive market by focusing on substance rather than relying on gimmicks – and making a mark in the next phase of vodka development. Mahony discussed NEFT’s value proposition, the shifting consumer behavior influencing the vodka category, and the strategies required to build a brand with sustained global relevance.
1. Can you walk us through your personal journey from finance to becoming a key leader in the spirits world with NEFT?
My background is rooted in finance and technology, where I gained a solid understanding of how businesses scale and succeed. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in various industries, from aerospace patents to fintech innovation, always seeking to identify market gaps and develop solutions. Recognizing the potential with NEFT Vodka—a female-founded brand with a clear mission and a premium product—provided an opportunity to apply my operational expertise and entrepreneurial passion to lead and grow a distinct name in the spirits industry. My role is focused on scaling the brand globally while staying aligned with its original vision – offering a high-quality, two-ingredient vodka crafted with purity and sustainability at its core.
2. What inspired the name NEFT, and how does the brand’s origin story influence its identity today?
NEFT means “oil” in Russian, which connects directly to our founder, Katya Kuzmina’s family heritage. Before relocating to Austria in the 1980s, her family was involved in the oil business in Siberia. Naming the brand NEFT and designing the bottle in the shape of an oil barrel honors that legacy, while also reflecting the bold, unconventional spirit the brand embodies. This distinctive packaging is not just a visual choice; it represents NEFT’s philosophy of standing out, doing things differently, and honoring heritage with a modern, sustainable approach.
3. What are some major shifts you’ve seen in the vodka or spirits category in recent years, and how does NEFT stand out?
In the past several years, consumers have become more value-driven and discerning. They are not only concerned with what’s in the bottle – or barrel, in our case – but also want to understand the story behind the product, its origins, and the broader impact of their choices. Transparency and sustainability are now increasingly important to them. NEFT appeals to these preferences because we offer a vodka made from just two ingredients: mineral-rich spring water filtered for centuries deep beneath the Austrian Alps and ancient, non-GMO rye grains. We don’t use sugar or additives. Our unique barrel packaging is eco-friendly, lightweight, and designed to keep vodka cold for a longer period, which differentiates us both visually and functionally. It’s a holistic approach: exceptional quality, an engaging story, and a commitment to sustainability.
4. How do you uphold NEFT’s “ultra-premium” promise from distillation to packaging?
To us, “ultra-premium” signifies a commitment to uncompromising quality at every stage. It begins with sourcing the finest ingredients, such as the mineral-rich Alpine spring water and the carefully selected ancient rye grains. The water’s journey through layers of slate and granite over centuries naturally purifies and softens it, contributing to NEFT’s distinct, clean taste. Our distillation process is precise, preserving a nuanced flavor profile that includes hints of pepper, caramel, vanilla, and lemongrass. The packaging also reflects our values. Our signature barrel is not only visually distinctive, but it’s made from tin and aluminum, which have a higher recycled content than glass. It’s lightweight, minimizing transport emissions, and is designed to be unbreakable and recyclable, keeping the spirit cold for extended periods.
5. What leadership principles guide your decision-making as NEFT grows rapidly?
I believe in thinking several moves ahead while remaining deeply connected to the team and day-to-day operations. Transparency, trust, and empowerment are fundamental to how we work. Culture drives performance. I focus on building systems that solve problems and create value, and I surround myself with smart, capable individuals who can execute on our vision. Taking thoughtful risks, like sticking with our barrel design early on, has been instrumental in shaping NEFT’s identity.
6. NEFT has made waves with global partnerships, including sponsoring the Visa Cash App Racing Bull Formula One Team. How do global partnerships like this play into your broader business strategy?
As NEFT Vodka expands its global presence, now available in more than 20 countries, partnerships with internationally recognized organizations provide valuable exposure to new markets and audiences. Our partnership with the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls Formula One Team is part of a broader effort to introduce NEFT to consumers who value excellence, innovation, and elevated experiences. These partnerships also open doors for unique storytelling and cultural relevance across different regions, helping us build brand awareness and connect with customers in a way that’s authentic and scalable. While we remain focused on maintaining product integrity and operational excellence, initiatives like these allow us to plant a flag in new territories and stay top of mind in a competitive market.
