Bill Sauser is a reminder that some of the most rewarding things in life often come when one least expects them—like sitting by a marina with a glass of wine in hand and writing about relationships. Fast-forward to 2024, and Bill’s long-awaited book, Relationship 101: Personal and Business, is finally available to the public. But this isn’t just any book; it’s a project that sat on his computer for over a decade, waiting for what he felt was the right moment to share it with the world.
The story behind Relationship 101 is one of passion, patience, and—of course—wine. Back in 2009, Bill found himself at a crossroads in his life. Having retired from his career in the insurance industry, he was living in a high-rise condo by the river in Detroit. He had a boat slip, a quiet marina, and all the time in the world to reflect on his experiences. It was there, day after day, that Bill would grab his laptop, pour a glass of wine, and start typing about the one thing that seemed to fascinate him most: relationships.
“I wrote this book as a hobby, sitting by the water with a bottle of wine and four glasses. My friends would come by, and we’d hang out while I typed. It was just fun,” he recalls. But little did he know that those casual writing sessions would eventually evolve into something far more significant. “The book was about 90% done, but it just sat on my computer. It wasn’t something I thought I’d ever publish,” he adds.
So why did he never publish it? The answer, it seems, lies in Bill’s pragmatic and grounded approach to life. He never felt the immediate need to share his work, but everything changed when he discovered the concept of self-publishing on Amazon. This revelation was the spark he needed. He decided that if he could help even one person improve their relationships, whether personal or professional, the effort would be worthwhile.
