For over four and a half decades, one name has been synonymous with breakthrough and innovation in the field of cancer research -- Dr. Samuel Waxman, CEO and founder of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF). As a respected member of Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s faculty for more than 30 years, and now Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Oncological Sciences, Waxman's illustrious career and in-depth scholarship have left an indelible mark on medical science. Significantly, he was among the first to study differentiation as a cancer therapy which led to finding a cure for Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia. Most recently he was appointed Honorary Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 1976, he founded SWCRF where he has been a unique proponent of cross-disciplinary research integral to advancements in treating cancer. Central to this is Waxman's strong conviction in the power of collaboration, an ethos firmly embedded in the Foundation's methodology. In Waxman's own words, "The only way to end cancer as we know it is by working together," a mantra proven true time and again through the Foundation's concerted efforts involving numerous laboratories and investigators around the world. For example, in pursuance of international cooperation and the sharing of information, Waxman helped establish the International Conference on the Differentiation Therapy of Cancer and in 2018 co-founded the International Center for Aging and Cancer Research in Hainan, China, part of SWCRF’s International Network for Aging and Cancer Research. Through the foundation’s Institute Without Walls and many partnerships, SWCRF is currently supporting 60 scientists throughout the U.S., Canada, China, Europe, and Israel. Waxman's scholarly contributions to the field are exceptional. With over 300 scientific papers under his belt, he has consistently been at the forefront of pioneering research. His works extend beyond research papers to significant contributions in textbooks on hematology, chemotherapy, and nutrition. He has also written a comprehensive series of books titled Differentiation Therapy and The Leukemia Cell. These contributions have furthered our understanding and built a solid foundation for future research. The profound impact of Waxman's work transcends scientific exploration and public health. His unwavering dedication to collaborative research illustrates the boundless potential of unity in the pursuit of knowledge. Every laboratory, every scientist, each with their unique strength and expertise, contributes to this unparalleled combat against cancer. Dr. Samuel Waxman's dedication, illustrated in his ongoing efforts, exemplifies the spirit of shared endeavor in the quest for breakthroughs in cancer research. His legacy, firmly rooted in the principle of collaboration, continues to inspire the global cancer research community. His conviction in unity fosters a hope that someday, through shared knowledge and joint efforts, humanity will successfully end cancer as we know it. Indeed, SWCRF remains not just a testament to Waxman’s commitment and resolve but also a standing invitation for all stakeholders to collaboratively create a world free from the scourge of cancer. The journey is far from completed, but with such dedicated leaders at the helm, it continues to gain momentum. Key to continuing to support crucial research are annual fundraising events such as, the annual Collaborating for a Cure Gala, also known as The Waxman, which has funneled more than $50 million into breakthrough cancer research over the past 25 years. SWCRF will host the upcoming 10th Annual Waxman Luncheon on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at Riverpark in Kips Bay with a fashion presentation by Josie Natori.
