The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated that one in every eight persons globally was living with a mental health disorder in 2019, bringing the total to nearly 1 billion people. This sobering reality highlights that mental health challenges may be more prevalent than many realize, impacting friends, families, and loved ones. While the statistics are available, those who suffer from mental health issues often feel uncertain about where to turn.

This conundrum has persisted for many years, affecting communities worldwide. Depending on the type and severity of the disorder, mental health conditions can contribute to strained marriages and relationships, lost jobs and careers, disrupted homes, and in some cases, tragic outcomes. It is this reality that has motivated individuals like Christina Izokovic to offer support to those navigating mental health challenges.

Christina emphasizes that taking the first step is often crucial in the journey toward healing. “Opening up and sharing your story can be a powerful step, one that may encourage others and bring you closer to healing. Talking about it matters, but first, you need to recognize that something isn’t right. Self-awareness, rather than denial, plays a key role. Acknowledging the issue is often the foundation for seeking help,” she says.

Finding the Right Support for You

Often, people struggling with mental health feel unsure about where to begin or how to access the help they need. In some cases, they may connect with therapists or psychiatrists who don’t feel like the right fit. Christina notes that this is common, but encourages people not to settle for a therapist they don’t feel comfortable with. “If a therapist isn’t the right match for you, that doesn’t mean therapy itself won’t help—it’s about finding someone you connect with, who understands you and can provide meaningful support.

“So, if your current therapist isn’t working out, keep looking—the right fit is out there. I also suggest researching your diagnosis to better understand what you’re experiencing and to identify therapists who specialize in your specific challenges. Progress takes time, so be patient with yourself,” she advises.

As she mentioned, having accurate knowledge is valuable. Researching not only helps individuals understand their experiences but also empowers them to explore effective ways to move forward. Research may also guide them toward reputable resources or therapists who can support their recovery. Regardless of the path taken, knowledge is a helpful starting point, followed by taking action.

Having faced her own struggles, Christina’s platform, Why Not Be Authentic™, has grown into a safe space for individuals of all backgrounds to feel accepted, free from judgment, and supported in their healing process.

“My journey, shaped by childhood trauma and mental health challenges, inspired me to focus on my well-being and share my story openly. Her transition from a 15-year career as a Registered Nurse to a Fortune 500 company role as a Regional Trainer and Sr. Therapeutic Specialist—focused on breast cancer treatments—and now to a stay-at-home mom passionately advocating for mental health reflects her dedication to supporting others in their struggles.

Looking Ahead

With her journey still unfolding—and plans to expand her knowledge and skills to better serve others—Christina has already achieved meaningful milestones in just over a year since launching. “Seeing my Podcast featured on a digital billboard in Times Square last November was an incredible moment in my career. It reinforced the impact of this work—that I’m contributing to a growing community, helping others, and gradually reducing the stigma around mental health, step by step,” she says.

Reiterating the importance of taking the first step, she adds, “Focus on learning what you need, finding a therapist who aligns with you, and being open to discussing your experiences.”
