Richelieu Dennis, a prominent figure impacting both the Black community and humanity at large, was recently celebrated for his significant contributions. The global civil organization, Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD), honored Dennis alongside other pioneers for their work toward advancing the equitable economic prosperity of people of African descent worldwide during its Recognition Week 2023.
From humble beginnings, as a Liberian refugee who moved to the U.S. in 1980, Dennis has scaled remarkable heights. He found immense success in founding Shea Moisture, Sundial, and other consumer products. His ventures not only sprouted fruitful businesses but upheld the value of African resources, amplifying their unique worth on a global scale.
This MIPAD Recognition Week 2023, running from September 28th to October 2nd at the United Nations Plaza in New York City, was more than just a ceremonial event. It crafted a dynamic dialogue on effective practices, shared narratives, and collaboration across borders. It provided a forum for change-makers, including Dennis, to share their experiences and devise global strategies that catalyze equity and equality across the globe.
Among the honored were Dr. Tedros A. Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, Nicole Brown, President of TriStar Pictures at Sony Pictures Entertainment (USA), and Robert F. Smith, Chairman and CEO of Vista Equity. This distinguished gathering, featuring individuals filling impactful roles worldwide, was mindfully designed to foster global Black narratives and shed light on the community’s struggles and triumphs often left untold.
Kamil Olufowobi, MIPAD’s Founder & President, stated, “This global assembly offers a platform for sharing local experiences and developing global strategies to promote equality and equity in communities worldwide.” The event embraced the genuine essence of global unity, intending to echo the significant contributions of those of African descent.
Rich Dennis is no stranger to impactful contributions, however. Beyond founding Shea Moisture and Sundial, he channeled his energy into Essence Ventures, which soon secured Essence Magazine and Essence Festival. The Essence Festival, known as the world’s largest celebration of Black women, culture and community, drew an audience exceeding half a million visitors over the years.
Resonating his relentless commitment to the African entrepreneurial spirit, Dennis launched the New Voices Fund. Leveraging a $100M initial investment, this fund invests in businesses owned by Black women. Through this initiative, Dennis has supported African-American entrepreneurship, striving for its deserved representation in the global business landscape.
