Michael P. Rutland’s lifelong dedication to leadership and service has earned him recognition from Marquis Who’s Who and inclusion in its prestigious biographical listings. With a career spanning more than four decades, Mr. Rutland made a lasting impact on the U.S. Air Force, Boeing and the Knights of Columbus, where he serves as Washington state membership director.
A Distinguished Military Career
Mr. Rutland’s career began in 1974 when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served until 1998. Throughout his 24-year military career, he made significant contributions as an aircraft armament systems manager for Air Combat Command. His expertise in armament systems and leadership abilities earned him the rank of senior master sergeant.
Mr. Rutland’s time in the military included service during the Gulf War, and he was instrumental in the early stages of the Desert Storm campaign. His leadership during this time earned him several commendations.
Mr. Rutland’s military experience shaped his approach to leadership, emphasizing the importance of training future leaders. He often credits his father’s influence and his own experiences in the Air Force for inspiring his leadership philosophy.
Transition to Boeing and Entrepreneurship
After retiring from the Air Force, Mr. Rutland joined Boeing in 1998. He initially served as a training manager for the F-22 program and later became a technical lead engineer and project manager for the same program. At Boeing, he oversaw the development and training of personnel until his retirement in 2016.
Mr. Rutland’s work with Boeing demonstrated his expertise in engineering and his ability to manage large teams and complex projects. In 2010, he founded Northwest Motivation, a company dedicated to helping individuals in the Seattle area achieve their entrepreneurial dreams. He served as chief executive officer until 2023, further honing his leadership and mentorship skills.
Leadership in the Knights of Columbus
Mr. Rutland’s involvement in the Knights of Columbus began more than 40 years ago. He has held numerous leadership roles, including past grand knight, faithful navigator, and district deputy, and his leadership in these roles culminated in his rise to Washington state membership director in 2021. In this position, he oversees recruitment efforts across 35 districts. Under his guidance, the state has achieved the prestigious Supreme Knight Circle of Honor for four consecutive years.
Alongside his recruitment efforts, Mr. Rutland has led several programs within the Knights of Columbus, including Special Olympics and Coats for Kids. His dedication to these causes has positively impacted his local community and beyond. Due to his exceptional leadership, he received the Director of the Year Award from the Knights of Columbus Washington State Council in both 2022 and 2023.
Commitment to Service and Legacy
Fueled by his passion for service, Mr. Rutland continues his work with the Knights of Columbus. He is focused on growing the organization and ensuring a smooth transition for his successor when he steps down. Mr. Rutland’s legacy of leadership and community involvement extends beyond his noteworthy military service and into his work with the Knights of Columbus, where his influence continues to inspire future generations of leaders.
