When a career rooted in oncology research meets the wide-open horizons of the travel world, the result is not a detour; it becomes a reinvention. Joelle Machia, co-founder and co-owner of Wanderers Compass, has transformed a lifetime of cultural fluency, professional precision, and personal resilience to create a brand that guides travelers toward meaningful experiences.

Early Life and Dual Perspectives

Joelle’s background reflects the meeting of two cultures and perspectives. As a dual citizen of France and the United States, she grew up fluent in both languages and comfortable navigating different worldviews. From her French heritage, she gained an appreciation for nuance, tradition, and legacy, while her American upbringing reinforced values of possibility, creativity, and determination.

Her academic path carried the same balance. Earning degrees in Nursing and Behavioral Sciences, she combined clinical knowledge with an understanding of human behavior. This foundation guided her work in oncology and medical research, where she contributed to industry discussions, peer-reviewed publications, and initiatives designed to support patients and their families.

From Volunteer Work to a Shared Mission

The moment that shifted her course didn’t come in a hospital corridor but through a volunteer program mailbox. Joelle ā€œadoptedā€ Ryan while he was deployed, and after he returned home to the East Coast, they stayed in touch. What began as a friendship gradually became family. Over the years, Ryan joined Joelle’s family on vacations, but it wasn’t until much later that she invited him to join her on one of her trips to Europe, his first overseas experience. The trip proved transformational, giving Ryan a renewed sense of direction that would continue to evolve over the years that followed. They returned to Europe several times, each journey becoming more impactful than the last. For Joelle, it was an eye-opening realization of the true power of travel, an insight that ultimately led to the creation of Wanderers Compass.

For Ryan, travel offered a sense of restoration and renewed direction. For Joelle, it provided evidence of its ability to restore confidence and expand possibilities. Together, they recognized that this impact could be shared more broadly. Acting on that insight, they founded Wanderers Compass.

Launching Wanderers Compass

From that first decision, Wanderers Compass grew into a platform that redefined what travel could represent. Rather than focusing solely on itineraries, Joelle and Ryan positioned the venture around the idea that travel can restore confidence, deepen cultural understanding, and provide lasting personal insight.

Since its launch in 2020, the platform has published more than 220 articles and destination guides that combine historical context with wellness-centered guidance. Its podcast and visual storytelling extend the experience, offering travelers new ways to engage with cultures and perspectives. Beyond publishing, Wanderers Compass supports the broader travel industry through consulting projects, collaborations with tourism boards, and features in outlets such as Forbes, Newsweek, and Food, Wine & Travel Magazine.

Travel as a Path to Resilience

Wanderers Compass defines leadership through authentic experience and applied knowledge. Drawing on her clinical education, Joelle anticipates the operational and health-related challenges of travel. Her expertise in behavioral sciences highlights how immersive experiences can strengthen mindset, resilience, and perspective.

The philosophy also extends to those often overlooked, such as veterans navigating life after service, travelers managing health considerations, or individuals seeking something beyond sightseeing. ā€œWe don’t just tell people where to go; we help them believe they can go,ā€ Joelle affirms.

In 2025, Joelle’s leadership in promoting purposeful and restorative travel earned international recognition. She was invited to speak at a United Nations side event on sustainable and transformational travel, where she shared insights on how meaningful exploration can foster resilience, connection, and cultural understanding. Joelle will be appointed as a UN Representative for ECOSOC, a one-year role beginning in January 2026, further reflecting her growing influence in shaping conversations around ethical and conscious travel.

Industry Recognition and Reach

The credibility Wanderers Compass has earned stems from consistent, principled work. Joelle has been a member of the Forbes Business Council since 2024 and has been featured in LA Weekly, Canvas Rebel, and MSN.

Her recent recognition reflects that growing influence. At the 2025 Fortuna Global Excellence Awards, Joelle was named Travel Content Creator of the Year and Travel Influencer of the Year, honors that underscore the reach and credibility of her work in the global travel space. She also contributed a chapter to the forthcoming book Founders in Focus: Unstoppable Entrepreneurs & Their Game Plans, which is currently in publication.

She was included in LA Weekly’s ā€œTop 10 Travel Experts for Adventure Lovers Worldwide.ā€ Her audience has grown organically, with a significant following across Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, her contributions to Google Maps have garnered widespread attention, reflecting her growing influence and reach.

These numbers are less about scale and more about trust. Readers view Wanderers Compass not as fleeting content but as a dependable source for travel that holds meaning.

Looking Ahead for Wanderers Compass

For Wanderers Compass, growth will always align with authenticity. Joelle foresees expansion through deeper collaboration with tourism leaders, while the Wanderers Compass Podcast continues to evolve with a wider range of perspectives and destinations.

As its influence expands, Wanderers Compass remains anchored in its founding principles: resilience, honesty, and the belief that exploration fosters growth and understanding.
