Rethinking Where Healing Happens

Ythier’s journey began after decades working in clinics, nonprofits, and social service agencies. She saw firsthand how people with intellectual disabilities often faced challenges accessing therapy. Many encountered long waiting lists, transportation difficulties, or felt uneasy in unfamiliar offices. “Life does not happen on a couch, and neither should therapy,” Ythier explains. She believes that clients may feel more comfortable and open when they are in familiar settings, incorporating new coping skills into everyday life, which can support lasting change and healing.

Mind Speak, Inc. was founded in 2017 with this principle at its core. Ythier’s team travels to wherever the client feels most comfortable—whether that’s a group home, a school, or a favorite coffee shop. This flexibility helps to remove some of the common obstacles, making it easier for clients to begin and continue therapy. The practice has provided thousands of hours of therapy, supporting people of all ages in building coping skills, self-confidence, and emotional resilience.

Tailoring Care to Each Individual

Ythier’s model acknowledges that every person has unique strengths and challenges. Her team incorporates art, yoga, and other creative therapies to help clients express themselves and manage emotions. For example, one young man with autism discovered a talent for drawing, which became both a coping skill and a source of pride. “We help our clients identify and use their strengths to overcome challenges and work toward their goals,” Ythier says.

Sessions are tailored to each individual’s needs. Therapists collaborate closely with families, schools, and other support networks to create plans that suit each client’s unique situation. Services are available in both English and Spanish, and Mind Speak’s staff regularly works with community organizations to reach those who might otherwise be excluded. This person-centered approach helps clients feel respected and supported as they work toward greater independence.

Advocacy, Training, and Community Impact

Beyond therapy, Mind Speak, Inc. is dedicated to advocacy and education. The team provides training for mental health and human service professionals, sharing best practices for supporting people with intellectual disabilities. Ythier also focuses on educating families and the broader community, aiming to reduce stigma and increase understanding.

Mind Speak, Inc. is seeking approval to offer continuing education credits for professionals in New York State. The organization’s advocacy efforts include engaging with policymakers and participating in campaigns that promote disability rights. Ythier’s work has been acknowledged by major publications, but she finds the greatest satisfaction in seeing clients thrive in their daily lives.

Nina Ythier’s story shows that mental health care has the potential to reach more people when it adapts to their needs and environments. By bringing therapy directly to clients, she works to remove barriers and create opportunities for growth, healing, and lasting change.
