When faced with such adversities, the objective of preserving a hard-earned reputation warrants the use of robust measures, even if they tiptoe on the edges of conventional ethical paradigms. Negative online reputation repair encompasses a range of strategies - from generating positive content to drown out the negative, to employing legal measures for the removal of defamatory material. While critics argue about the ethics of such practices, the real-world implications of a tarnished online reputation could be dire, impacting livelihoods, mental health, and the overall sustainability of a business. The proponent of a pragmatic approach to online reputation repair, Tinto Jose Koikkara (TJ), the founder of Reputn, an online reputation management agency, opines, "In a landscape where one's digital persona is intricately tied to their real-world identity, employing every available method to safeguard one's reputation is a pragmatic necessity rather than an ethical dilemma." TJ elaborates on the strategies employed at Reputn, stating, "At Reputn, we harness every available or conceivable method to either eliminate the links or push them down, all with the aim of achieving the desired outcomes for our clients." The essence of this argument lies in the reality that the internet seldom forgets or forgives. A decade-old negative review or an out-of-context social media post can resurface and wreak havoc at any time. This unforgiving nature of the digital domain necessitates a proactive and sometimes aggressive stance in managing online reputations. Moreover, the legal frameworks governing online content and defamation are often lagging behind the rapid evolution of digital platforms, leaving individuals and businesses in a precarious position when slandered online. In such a scenario, taking matters into one's own hands, employing every tool in the arsenal of online reputation repair, becomes a rational choice. TJ further accentuates, "The digital world is still like the wild west in many aspects, with inadequate regulations to curb the spread of misinformation and defamation. Until a more robust legal framework is established, the pragmatic approach of using any means necessary for reputation repair remains a rational choice." The debate on the ethics of online reputation repair methods often overlooks the harsh realities of the digital landscape. As individuals and organizations grapple with the complexities of online reputation repair and the line between the digital and real-world personas continues to blur, they are compelled to strike a balance between ethics and pragmatism, guided by the imperative to protect and nurture their digital identities in an ever-connected world.
