Though tragic and traumatic events happen all over the world every single day, most people go through life unaware of just how real, unexpected, and devastating they are. Before a life-altering road accident in November 2015, Mike Thor was one of them. With a single left turn onto North Person Street in Raleigh, everything changed. On his way to his best friend’s house, Thor’s scooter was hit by a car changing lanes, and, within seconds, life as he knew it was over.Ā

With sustained injuries to his spine, Thor lost his mobility and was forced to relearn how to go through day-to-day motions. His life, however, hasn’t been the only one that’s changed, with family, friends, and everyone around him carrying some part of the accident’s weight. Looking back, Thor realizes that it is their resilience, patience, and selflessness that helped him rediscover positivity and joy amidst the darkest time in his life.

ā€œThe word need gained a completely different meaning,ā€ he shares. ā€œAll of a sudden, the things I used to think I needed were so trivial and meaningless, and the things I used to take for granted were the ones I couldn’t live without. It’s been a crazy journey of ups, downs, and transformative realizations, and I couldn’t have done it without the people around me. Because they stood by me, this new life I’ve got now is, somehow, just as beautiful as before, just in a very different way.ā€

For him, the community truly rallied, even if it meant giving up on their own dreams. Thor’s wife, while grappling with the new reality and watching her husband’s spark fade, gave up a successful career in tech to become his full-time caregiver. Because of her support, Thor is closer to being more self-sufficient than he could have ever expected. His wife, on the other hand, is still picking up the pieces after her sacrifice.

ā€œIn the tech industry, you can’t just take a 5-year vacation and then return like nothing happened. To this day, she’s trying hard to get her work life back on track, but it’s not easy,ā€ he shares. ā€œAnd she knew it wouldn’t be when she left. Despite that, she did it for me, without any hesitation.ā€

While Thor’s wife was a central part of his personal recovery, his friends and family have unanimously united to make his lifelong professional dream come true. When the accident happened, Whiskey Kitchen, the restaurant he had been conceptualizing for years, was in its final construction phase. Sadly, it opened without him, but Thor’s support system ensured it thrived.

ā€œThe community around me gave up so much just to make a dream of mine come true. Some people slept on hammocks to prepare it for the opening, some left their jobs to join the Whiskey Kitchen team, and others dedicated all their free time to raising money,ā€ Thor recalls. ā€œLittle did I know, they didn’t only save Whiskey Kitchen; they saved me, making sure that I had a sustainable income and purpose after rehab.ā€

Being able to return to a positive environment, surrounded by happy and proud employees, fueled Thor’s recovery process. Inspired by his journey and despite the strain it had on them, Thor’s family harnessed trauma into a catalyst for change by founding the Raleigh franchise of NextStep, an organization providing that sense of community for people without the same support structures Thor had. Through this chain of paralysis rehab centers, they have guided hundreds of people toward happiness and recovery.

ā€œEveryone I loved adapted their lives to be there for me, and I’ve seen the pain and struggle behind it. None of it would have been possible without their dedication, and that’s why they persevered, for me,ā€ Thor says. ā€œBut it hasn’t all been about suffering; it’s also been about lessons. And if there’s one thing that I have learned, it’s that life never loses its beauty. Sometimes, it just has to be rediscovered – with friends, family, and positivity by your side.ā€
