Dedicating over four decades to focusing on quality and craftsmanship, Steve Godwin has become a well-regarded figure in the construction industry. In 1982, Mr. Godwin founded Godwin Residential Construction, a company known for its upscale residential interior construction. Based in New York City, he currently serves as the company’s chief executive officer.
Mr. Godwin’s Professional Journey
Mr. Godwin was born in Frankfurt, Germany, while his father was serving in the military, returning to America when he was just six months old. His professional journey is shaped by early personal experiences with his engineer father and his academic background.
Mr. Godwin received a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Tulane University in 1974. His early professional experiences include working in life insurance and as a model, which led to his appearance in publications such as GQ magazine and paved the way for his move to New York City. These experiences helped him hone his people skills and strengthen his ability to navigate challenges effectively, which played a role in his transition to the construction industry.
Mr. Godwin’s professional journey in construction began with his first assignment while working with a friend who operated a design-build business. During his first project, the restoration of a landmark brownstone located in Gramercy Park, he gained valuable skills and knowledge, which helped him build a strong foundation for his career in construction.
As the founder and chief executive officer of Godwin Residential Construction, Mr. Godwin takes pride in assembling a skilled team. He values every team member’s passion and commitment, fostering an environment where dedication to quality remains a key priority. Among the significant projects he and his team have worked on is the restoration of a historic brownstone that once served as a church, preserving the structure’s distinctive Romanesque-style architecture.
Outside of Construction
Beyond his work at Godwin Residential Construction, Mr. Godwin is also engaged in generating new business opportunities and cultivating relationships with clients. An avid equestrian for over 40 years, he enjoys horseback riding and owns two dressage horses that participate in adult amateur competitions. One of his horses has contributed to his success in winning a regional championship title for two consecutive years.
Grateful to his father, a professional in the engineering sector who introduced Mr. Godwin to construction sites at an early age, he plans to continue making meaningful contributions to the industry and remains committed to maintaining high standards of quality. He credits a significant portion of his success to the focus on quality work that he and his team bring to each project, as well as their ability to effectively communicate with clients and the boards necessary to obtain project approval. Looking forward, Mr. Godwin hopes to continue developing both professionally and personally, supporting others on their paths to growth and altruism.
