When you think of North Carolina and waterfront homes, one thinks of the Outer Banks (the TV show on Netflix has made this an even more popular destination). North Carolina’s Outer Banks is a chain of barrier islands known for their beautiful beaches, historic lighthouses (such as Cape Hatteras and Bodie Island Lighthouses), and wild horses. It’s also where the Wright brothers conducted their historic first flight. Real estate in the Outer Banks varies by location, with oceanfront properties generally commanding higher prices than soundfront or marshfront homes. It may be the most popular body of water in North Carolina, but it is not the only one. There are many lakes, artificial and natural, and reservoirs throughout North Carolina that are perfect to own a waterfront home. Understanding the market is critical, so Tomo, a real estate and mortgage website, wanted to help narrow the list of available waterfront homes for sale.

Check out these towns where waterfront properties are on the market right now:

Charlotte, NC: While Charlotte is not known for extensive coastal or oceanfront properties like Savannah or other coastal cities, it does offer some opportunities for waterfront living, primarily along lakes and reservoirs. Lake Norman, located about 20 miles north of Charlotte, is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina and offers extensive waterfront properties. Homes along Lake Norman often feature private docks, boathouses, and panoramic lake views. Residents enjoy boating, fishing, water sports, and access to lakeside amenities such as marinas and waterfront restaurants.

Cornelius, NC: Cornelius is located in Mecklenburg County and is known for its picturesque waterfront properties along Lake Norman, the largest manufactured lake in North Carolina. There are some key areas and neighborhoods in Cornelius where you can find waterfront homes including the Peninsula. This upscale community in Cornelius offers luxury waterfront homes along Lake Norman. The Peninsula features custom-built estates with private docks, boat slips, and panoramic lake views. Residents enjoy access to golf courses, marinas, and lakeside amenities. Another area are homes along Jetton Road in Cornelius offer waterfront views and access to Lake Norman. This area features single-family homes, townhomes, and condominiums with private docks and lakeside living options. See many more areas in our list of properties above.

Durham, NC: Durham offers many lakes to own a waterfront home. Some lakes include Jordan Lake, Falls Lake, Lake Michie and Lake Hogan Farms. These lakes are reservoirs, but offer many waterfront properties with scenic views and access to boating.

Greensboro, NC: While Greensboro may have fewer options for traditional waterfront homes than coastal or larger lakefront cities, many nearby reservoirs and community lakes provide opportunities for residents seeking a waterfront lifestyle.

Huntersville, NC: Huntersville, located north of Charlotte, offers several opportunities for waterfront living primarily along Lake Norman, the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. Some examples include The Peninsula, an upscale community in Huntersville offering luxury waterfront homes along the shores of Lake Norman. Another is the Birkdale community in Huntersville, which provides for homes along the shores of Lake Norman with waterfront views and access to community amenities such as a golf club, tennis courts, and lakeside parks. Birkdale offers a blend of residential living with recreational opportunities on the lake. Lookout Point is another area on the eastern shore of Lake Norman in Huntersville which features homes with expansive views of the lake and private docks. This neighborhood offers a serene lakeside lifestyle with opportunities for boating, fishing, and enjoying the natural beauty of Lake Norman.

Raleigh, NC: This is another city in North Carolina that does not offer coastal ocean living or traditional places to purchase a waterfront home but offers many nearby lakes and reservoirs.

North Carolina has many lakes, ponds, and reservoirs where one can enjoy the tranquility of owning a waterfront home. Happy home shopping!
