After 10 years as a firefighter, Mike Ettenberg sparked a fire in the eyewear business.
Ettenberg’s journey from first responder to founder of Frontline Optics is a story of passion and determination—a brave decision to make a drastic career change. As a retired firefighter, he didn’t just pivot careers—he transformed his deep understanding of frontline needs into a business now setting new industry standards.
His journey begins in Santa Barbara, California, where he was raised by parents who were educators. His early life was marked by a strong sense of duty and a calling to serve others. This calling eventually led him to a career as a firefighter, a role he cherished for almost a decade. “I always wanted to make a difference,” Ettenberg recalls. “Being a firefighter allowed me to do just that.”

But as fulfilling as his career was, the entrepreneurial spirit that had been with him since childhood never faded. From running a lemonade stand to washing cars as a kid, Ettenberg always found ways to create value and solve problems. This innate drive to build something from nothing would later become the foundation of his business endeavors.
Building a Business from Scratch
In 2020, after years of serving as a first responder, Ettenberg found himself at a crossroads. “The idea for Frontline Optics came to me during a routine shift,” he explains. “I realized that the sunglasses we were using on the job weren’t up to the standards we needed. They didn’t offer the durability or protection required for such a demanding environment.”
This realization sparked the idea for Frontline Optics—a sunglasses company designed specifically for first responders. Ettenberg’s mission was clear: to create high-quality, durable eyewear that could withstand the rigors of life on the front lines.
Launching a business was no easy feat, especially in an industry he was unfamiliar with. “I had no background in manufacturing or retail,” Ettenberg admits. “But I knew that the key to success was to start, learn, and adapt quickly.” He spent months researching, learning the intricacies of product design, and finding the right manufacturers who could bring his vision to life.
Ettenberg’s approach was methodical and hands-on. He personally tested each prototype, ensuring that every pair of sunglasses met the stringent demands of first responders. His commitment to quality and functionality became the hallmark of the Frontline Optics brand.
The Inevitable Obstacles
Like any entrepreneur, Ettenberg faced his fair share of challenges. “The biggest hurdle was gaining trust,” he says. “As a newcomer in the eyewear industry, I had to prove that Frontline Optics was a brand that could deliver on its promises.” To build credibility, Ettenberg focused on customer feedback, constantly refining his products based on the needs and experiences of first responders.
This customer-centric approach paid off. Frontline Optics quickly gained a loyal following among first responders, and the company’s reputation for high-quality, durable sunglasses began to spread.
“Seeing my products in the hands of those who serve and protect is incredibly rewarding,” Ettenberg reflects. “It’s proof that we’re making a difference.”
Looking ahead, Ettenberg is committed to expanding the reach of Frontline Optics. His vision is to become the go-to brand for first responders worldwide, offering a range of products that cater to their unique needs. “We’re not just selling sunglasses,” he emphasizes. “We’re providing a tool that enhances safety and performance for those who are on the front lines every day.”
For Ettenberg, the journey from firefighter to CEO has been challenging yet fulfilling. His story is a powerful reminder that with passion, resilience, and a clear mission, it’s possible to turn a simple idea into a thriving business. “If you believe in your idea and are willing to put in the work, you can achieve something truly extraordinary,” he concludes.
From fighting fires to lighting up the eyewear industry with innovative designs, his story is a beacon for those who dare to dream big. At Frontline Optics, the mission goes beyond selling sunglasses—it’s about vision, resilience, and making a lasting impact in the community it serves.
