Matthew Brick didn’t always plan to become a lawyer. With a psychology degree in hand and aspirations of psychiatry, he was poised for medical school. But one night, a spirited round of Mario Kart with his older brother changed everything. What began as sibling banter about the difficulty of law school sparked a pivot that would define his career.
After scoring higher on the LSAT than on other graduate exams, Brick accepted a scholarship that allowed him to complete law school in just two years. He soon joined a long family tradition of practicing law; a lineage that includes his father, aunt, uncles, and over a dozen cousins. He found a career that not only played to his intellectual strengths but also fulfilled his desire to help people, much like his original path in mental health.
A Steady Hand in Shifting Legal Terrain
With 25 years of experience, Matthew Brick is a partner at Brick Gentry P.C., focusing primarily on employment and municipal law. He has built a reputation for not only mastering complex legal terrain but also bringing a grounded, calming presence to high-stakes situations.
In a legal field constantly disrupted by changes in leadership and regulation, especially within employment law, Brick’s adaptability and depth of knowledge keep his clients steady. “What’s allowed today might be challenged tomorrow,” he notes, pointing to how policies can shift dramatically from one administration to the next.
This is why he urges employers, especially in the public and private sectors across Iowa, to consult legal counsel before making changes to job descriptions, union contracts, or employment policies. “It’s much easier to prevent a problem than to clean one up after it explodes.”
Clients First: More Than a Motto
At the heart of Brick’s practice is a philosophy that sets him apart: putting clients first. His firm doesn’t just claim responsiveness, it lives by it. Their slogan, “We Put Clients First,” reflects a conscious effort to break the stereotype of inaccessible attorneys. For Brick, communication is a promise as much as a service.
He brings a unique blend of legal expertise and approachability to his work. “Most of my clients come to me in a moment of crisis,” he says. “The least I can do is ease their stress, explain their options clearly, and treat them with respect.” His informal and often jovial tone puts people at ease, even when the stakes are high.
Career Highlights and Future Vision
Brick’s resume speaks for itself. He graduated with honors from undergraduate school and with high distinction from law school. He is licensed in Iowa, the District of Columbia, Minnesota, and Nebraska. His admissions to the Fifth and Eighth Circuit Courts of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court are additional markers of his accomplished career.
Looking ahead, Brick hopes to continue growing his practice and mentoring clients for another decade. One of his greatest hopes is to eventually pass the torch to his son, continuing the family legacy that first inspired him to take the leap into law.
Guiding Employers with Clarity and Care
In a legal world often clouded with jargon and uncertainty, Matthew Brick stands out as a steady and accessible guide. Whether defending against civil rights complaints or navigating complex municipal regulations, his mission remains clear: to serve with integrity, clarity, and a client-first mindset. And in every legal crisis, he brings more than just expertise; he brings heart.
