John Boring is a real estate professional serving Anne Arundel County, Maryland, the place he has called home for more than fifty years. His roots in the area run deep, and his approach to the business reflects the kind of straightforward, client first mentality that comes from growing up in a family that understood what it meant to serve people.
A Foundation in Family Business
For the first three decades of his life, John’s family was in the restaurant and bar business. That background gave him an early education in customer relationships and the importance of treating people well. Working in hospitality meant long hours, constant interaction with the public, and learning how to read what people needed, sometimes before they even said it. Those lessons stayed with John long after he left the family business behind.
Finding Real Estate and a Mentor
After trying a few sales positions in other industries, he eventually found his way to real estate under the guidance of Don Gurney at GMAC Don Gurney, which later became Century 21 Don Gurney. That mentorship shaped how John operates to this day. Having someone who believed in him and showed him the ropes made all the difference in those early years, and he still carries that with him. Today, John continues to invest in his professional development and is professionally coached by the Mike Ferry Organization. Mike Ferry is known for introducing innovative coaching methods to real estate, helping agents adopt strategies used in other sales industries. Many of his students have achieved notable success in their careers.
“I try to live by the Golden Rule and treat others as I would like to be treated,” John said. It is a simple philosophy, but one he takes seriously in every transaction. In an industry where agents can sometimes prioritize their own interests, John has made it a point to do the opposite.
Putting Clients First
When asked what sets him apart in an industry full of competing voices, John keeps it direct. “We are supposed to put the client’s needs above our own in this business. I ask clients what they are trying to accomplish, and then advise them on how to get there.” There is no complicated formula. He listens, he advises, and he works toward what the client actually wants. That approach has earned him repeat business and referrals over the years, the kind of trust that only comes from consistently doing right by people.
Solving the Challenge of Time
The most common challenge John sees with clients is time. Some want everything to settle immediately. Others need more breathing room before they are ready to close. “There is almost always a solution to either problem,” he explained. His ability to navigate these situations comes from years of building relationships, not just with clients but with other agents and contacts throughout the area. He keeps detailed notes on everyone he speaks with, and those connections often help him put deals together before a property even reaches the Multiple Listing Service. It is an old school approach in some ways, but it works.
A Career Milestone and What Comes Next
John recently closed the biggest deal of his career: two properties that combined for just over $15 million. It is a significant milestone, but when he talks about success, he focuses less on the numbers and more on the people. “Awards are great, but having the people who helped you to get them continue to support you is very gratifying.” For John, the real measure of achievement is not a trophy on a shelf but the continued loyalty of clients and colleagues who have supported him throughout his career.
Currently, his work includes larger commercial deals as well as projects with builders and investors who flip houses. The scope of his business has grown over time, but the foundation remains the same: relationships, honesty, and putting the client first. Whether the transaction is a first-time home purchase or a multimillion-dollar commercial property, John brings the same level of attention and care.
For those looking to work with someone who knows Anne Arundel County inside and out, John Boring offers something that cannot be manufactured. He offers experience, consistency, and a genuine commitment to doing right by the people he serves. After more than fifty years in the community and a career built on trust, that is exactly what clients can expect.
