For Hooman Tavakolian, wrestling is more than a sport. It is a source of discipline, community, and confidence that should be accessible to young people regardless of where they live or what resources they have.
Through wrestling outreach and mentoring efforts, Tavakolian has donated wrestling shoes and gear to children in need around the world. He has also supported efforts to rebuild and refurnish wrestling gyms and mats in underserved communities, helping create places where young athletes can train, learn, and belong.
The work is rooted in a simple idea: talent and determination should matter more than whether a child can afford the equipment needed to step onto a mat.
Tavakolian knows personally how powerful that opportunity can be. After arriving in the United States from Iran as a child, he found structure and connection through wrestling. The sport became an important part of his development, teaching lessons in perseverance, responsibility, and self-belief that would continue to shape his life beyond competition.
Today, he is working to help make that same kind of experience possible for young people who may otherwise be left on the sidelines.
Removing Barriers to Participation
For many families, youth sports come with costs that can make participation difficult. Wrestling shoes, uniforms, registration fees, transportation, and access to suitable training facilities can all stand between a child and the chance to compete.
A pair of wrestling shoes may appear to be a small contribution, but for a young athlete without access to gear, it can be the difference between participating and watching from the edge of the room.
Tavakolian’s outreach focuses on meeting those practical needs. His work has included donating wrestling shoes and equipment to children in need, alongside efforts to improve training spaces in communities where athletic resources are limited.
This approach recognizes that access is about more than inspiration. A child may be eager to wrestle, but enthusiasm alone does not provide the equipment, facilities, or support system necessary to keep showing up.
By helping provide gear and strengthen local wrestling environments, Tavakolian is contributing to a more inclusive path into the sport. The goal is not only to give young athletes a chance to train today, but to help create conditions that allow them to remain involved over time.
Building Confidence Beyond the Mat
Wrestling offers lessons that extend well beyond athletic performance. It teaches young people how to prepare, manage setbacks, respect opponents, and work toward goals that may take years to achieve.
For children facing instability, economic hardship, or displacement, those lessons can carry particular value. A regular practice schedule, a coach’s encouragement, and the support of teammates can create a sense of routine and belonging.
Tavakolian has long viewed wrestling as a way to connect people across different cultures and circumstances. His experiences in the sport have taken him into communities around the world, reinforcing his belief that young people can find common ground through discipline and shared effort.
In 2025, Tavakolian participated in a Wrestling for Peace trip to Jordan supporting Syrian refugee children. The initiative reflected the same principle that informs his broader outreach: that sport can offer young people more than physical activity. It can provide dignity, connection, and a space to imagine a future beyond immediate challenges.
For a child receiving wrestling gear, the value may not be measured only in competition results. It may be reflected in confidence in attending practice, willingness to join a team, or the realization that they have earned a place in a community.
Turning Opportunity Into Action
Tavakolian’s commitment to youth wrestling reflects the larger direction of his philanthropic work. Across his professional and nonprofit efforts, he has focused on expanding opportunities for people who face barriers to education, mentorship, and personal development.
His wrestling outreach brings that mission into a particularly direct form. It provides tangible support to young athletes while reinforcing the values that sports can help cultivate, including resilience, accountability, and respect.
The work also moves beyond one-time donations. Supporting equipment matters, but helping communities improve their facilities and sustain local programs can have a longer-term effect. A better mat, a refurbished gym, or a supply of gear can serve many young athletes over time.
For Tavakolian, giving young athletes a chance to wrestle is ultimately about giving them a chance to find out what the sport can do for them. Every child who receives a pair of wrestling shoes gains the opportunity to train, compete, and build the confidence, discipline, and sense of possibility that wrestling can teach.
