Despina Doukas connects content quality and audience understanding with the Montreal agency’s approach to search

Despina Doukas, partner and director of SEO at Webtmize, a Montreal-based digital marketing agency, brings a communications background to a field often discussed in technical terms. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Concordia University and has experience in public relations and content writing. Her work now sits at the intersection of what a business wants to communicate and what its prospective customers are trying to find.

That relationship runs through her published writing. Before generative AI became a central concern for marketers, Doukas was already arguing for meaningful content, clear navigation, and attention to the person behind a search. Her more recent work considers how those priorities carry into AI-assisted discovery.

Understanding the Question Behind the Keyword

Search engine optimization, or SEO, helps a website become easier to find through search engines. Keywords provide clues about what people want, but a list of popular phrases does not explain everything a reader needs from a page.

In an earlier article about building a lasting search presence, Doukas emphasized natural language and user intent over keyword stuffing. She also addressed practical details such as clear page titles and the ease with which visitors can navigate a website. The concern was both finding an audience and making the resulting visit useful.

For a business, that distinction affects the substance of its content. Someone comparing service providers may need to understand the process, the limitations or what makes an option appropriate for their situation. Repeating a search phrase cannot answer those questions on its own. A page has to supply the explanation that prompted the search.

Keeping Expertise in the Content

Doukas returned to that issue in her May 2025 article on SEO in the age of AI. She described a search environment increasingly shaped by conversational questions and answers drawn from multiple sources. Her recommendations included developing connected coverage of a subject and giving readers clear answers.

She made room for AI in the production process while distinguishing it from the expertise behind the work. Discussing writing tools, she wrote that “they’re not a substitute for unique insight, voice, or expertise.” She pointed to first-hand experience, case studies, and original research as material businesses can contribute.

For an editor or content strategist, that creates a useful test: what does this business know that the draft has not yet captured? The missing element might be an explanation from a specialist, evidence from a project or an answer to a recurring customer question. Those details give a page a reason to exist alongside other coverage of the same subject.

Google’s own guidance makes a related distinction. It recognizes uses for generative AI in research and content structure while warning that producing many pages without adding value can violate its spam policies. It also calls for checking generated material for accuracy before publication.

Connecting Editorial Decisions With Search Work

At Webtmize, content sits within a wider SEO offering that includes audits, keyword strategy, technical optimization and performance monitoring. Doukas’s role as director places her communications experience within that broader discipline, where a useful page also needs to be discoverable and supported by a functioning website.

The agency also offers generative engine optimization, or GEO, which aims to improve a brand’s visibility in AI-generated answers. Its services include content audits, query strategy, and mention reporting. That extends the settings in which businesses want their information to be found, while leaving the need for accurate, understandable content intact.

The relationship between editorial and technical work matters here. A clear heading can help a reader locate an answer. A coherent set of related pages can make a complicated subject easier to explore. These are decisions about how information is organized as well as how it is presented.

Making Room for the People Behind the Work

Doukas has also written about the working environment that allows ideas to develop. In a 2021 essay on women in digital agencies, she described the importance of having her input heard and being encouraged to work through a fear of failure. She recalled team meetings where colleagues could present ideas, ask questions, and share what they had learned.

That account adds another dimension to her leadership profile. Her professional biography identifies team development and lasting client relationships as priorities alongside SEO strategy. Both require communication: understanding the business well enough to represent it accurately and giving colleagues room to contribute their knowledge.

Taken together, her writing and background suggest a consistent editorial instinct. Search content has to earn the reader’s attention by answering something worth asking. As discovery tools change, Doukas’s contribution at Webtmize remains grounded in that relationship between the quality of an explanation and the person who needs it.
