Daniela Elena Sarbu, Founder and Managing Director of Waldo International School, willingly shared her CEO-style journey. She openly shares insights into the school’s origins, philosophy, and future aspirations. Since its establishment in September 2011, this Jersey City-based institution has distinguished itself as a leader in educational excellence both in the U.S. and globally.  Her students have become global citizens, while her school is offering advanced educational opportunities for children up through middle school.

The Waldo International School emerged from Sarbu’s quest to find the perfect educational environment for her own child. “After becoming a parent in 2009, I explored various preschool options in Jersey City, but none met my expectations, shaped by my experiences with the educational system in Romania,” Sarbu recounts. This led her to create a nurturing and academically strong preschool, which officially opened in September 2011.

Fast forward to the 2024-2025 school year, the school now enrolls approximately 190 students from PreK2 through 8th grade. Over the years, it has grown organically, adding new grades annually and expanding its facilities to include locations at 110 1st Street, 125 1st Street, and a new site at 210 Hudson Street, which is set to open in September 2025.

The school’s unique offerings set it apart. “Our International Baccalaureate (IB) accreditation is a hallmark of our commitment to global education,” Sarbu notes. Currently, the school is accredited for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for grades PreK3-5th and is seeking accreditation for its middle school program.

Waldo emphasizes small class sizes and personalized learning. “Our small class sizes, with a teacher-to-student ratio not exceeding 1 to 12-14 for older grades, enable us to offer extensive one-on-one education and tailor learning plans for each student,” Sarbu highlights. The institution also boasts a diverse community, experienced faculty, and a wide array of after-school activities, including logic, science, fencing, volleyball, foreign languages, cheerleading, and swimming in an indoor saltwater pool.

When discussing the differences between private and public schooling, Sarbu highlights the advantages of smaller class sizes and a very strong admission process. “Our rigorous admissions process includes an admissions test for kindergarten and higher grades, ensuring we admit students who will thrive in our unique environment,” she explains.

The enriched curriculum at Waldo further differentiates it from public schools. “We incorporate informational technology, coding, public speaking, drama, art, music, and physical education into our curriculum, providing a well-rounded education that prepares students for a diverse and dynamic world,” Sarbu adds.

In addition, Waldo’s Gifted and Talented Program and early introduction to coding are designed to prepare students for future success. “We start teaching coding to children as young as four years old, enhancing their problem-solving and critical thinking skills,” says Sarbu. The school also utilizes the MAP Growth test to monitor student progress and ensure academic growth. MAP testing enables Waldo to tailor the education to meet the needs of each child.

A typical day at Waldo blends academic rigor with enrichment activities. “Our inquiry-based IB curriculum encourages students to explore subjects through questions and hands-on activities,” Sarbu explains. Students also engage in ‘specials’ like art, music, and languages, providing a balanced educational experience.

The school is also committed to fostering a strong community. “We foster a familial atmosphere where every individual is cherished and supported,” Sarbu emphasizes. School events, parent-teacher meetings, and community projects reinforce this sense of community, making Waldo feel like a family home.

Waldo offers a diverse range of extracurricular activities, from sports to academic clubs. “Our sports clubs and academic clubs like science and logic are incredibly popular because they enhance both physical fitness and intellectual growth,” says Sarbu.

Looking ahead, Waldo International School continues to expand. With a new location opening in September 2025, Sarbu envisions a bright future. “Our goal is to prepare students not only for academic success but also to become confident, empathetic individuals ready to face the complexities of the modern world,” she concludes.
