As career transitions reshape the technology industry, one executive who helped build a $1 billion global revenue engine at Hewlett-Packard made a decision that surprised many of her peers. She walked away from corporate America to help others navigate the very crossroads she once faced herself.

Julia Stegman, CCMC, MBA, spent three decades climbing the corporate ladder in the technology industry, leading global teams and advising more than 300 companies, including Microsoft, Salesforce, and SAP. Yet in 2019, she released what she calls the “golden handcuffs”—the generous compensation and benefits that can keep talented professionals tethered to roles that no longer align with their values.

“Three decades in tech showed me firsthand how talented professionals can feel trapped by layoffs, burnout, or simply the sense that their work no longer aligns with who they are. Career transitions can feel overwhelming, but with the right structure, they become opportunities for growth,” Stegman explains.

Today, as founder of Discover Meaningful Work and author of a book by the same name, Stegman guides professionals through The 5 Phases of a Career Transition™, a framework refined through years of executive recruiting and coaching.

Putting on the Handcuffs

Stegman’s story began at age 21, when a family friend mentioned an opening at Hewlett-Packard that offered double her current salary and medical coverage, which was essential since her existing plan didn’t cover pregnancy. She applied, was hired, and stepped into what would become a decades-long career in tech.

As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Stegman saw her ideas overlooked until echoed by male colleagues. A peer once told her candidly, “You have to be twice as good as the average man just to be viewed as credible.”

Rather than let those experiences diminish her, Stegman channeled them into her leadership philosophy. She resolved to champion inclusivity, mentor others, and create environments where all voices are heard and talent is recognized.

Building the Engine

At HP, Stegman quickly earned a reputation as a builder of cohesive teams, efficient systems, and scalable revenue models. After establishing a new sales function serving small- to medium-sized business customers, she led her team to exceed targets for three consecutive years. That success led to a global role, where she expanded HP’s inside sales team, contributing to its growth into a significant revenue generator and to the development of strategies and practices implemented across Europe and Asia.

Seeing a Pattern

Julia then pivoted her career and joined the Technology Services Industry Association (TSIA), where she served as Vice President of Research. There, she provided guidance to over 300 technology companies on recurring revenue models, helping to improve customer retention by up to 15 percent and generate significant recurring revenue.

She delivered over 70 speaking engagements to thousands of professionals and facilitated more than 30 executive workshops. Through this work, Stegman began noticing a pattern: talented professionals were getting stuck in roles that no longer served them. They were frozen by the very success they had worked so hard to achieve—unable to envision a path forward, whether that meant finding renewed purpose in their current role, moving to a new opportunity, or making a complete pivot.

Taking the Leap

In 2019, Stegman made the move many professionals can only imagine. She left corporate America to launch her own executive recruiting and career coaching practice.

“I wanted to operate my business according to what matters most to me, with the freedom to decide how to invest my time and energy, and pivot quickly based on market changes without seeking consensus,” she explains.

After five successful years, she set her sights on writing the book that had been on her mind for over two decades. Discover Meaningful Work distills her coaching philosophy into a practical guide for professionals navigating career transitions.

Stegman brings a rare 360-degree perspective to career transitions–she’s hired talent, climbed the executive ranks, recruited for top tech companies, and coached professionals through moments of uncertainty. That breadth of experience gives her a depth of insight few others can offer.

The Framework That Changes Everything

Her signature system, The 5 Phases of a Career Transition™, transforms career change from an overwhelming mystery into a transparent, structured process. The framework leads professionals through their career transition—whether that’s a new role, an internal pivot, or an entrepreneurial venture.

“Steering yourself toward growth creates a tailwind for your career.  When you’re devoting your time to work you enjoy, and that plays to your strengths, your quality of life goes up,” Stegman says.

Why This Matters for Today’s Professionals

In today’s tech landscape, career transitions are the norm. Automation, rapid industry shifts, and widespread layoffs mean leaders must think differently about talent retention and fulfillment.

Stegman’s work addresses a critical business challenge: How can companies retain top talent when professionals increasingly prioritize meaning and alignment over compensation? Her insights give leaders a framework to understand what drives their best people and how to create environments where they can thrive—reducing turnover by helping employees find fulfillment where they already are.

The ROI of Meaningful Work

Her approach proves that career fulfillment doesn’t mean abandoning responsibility or ignoring market realities. Instead, it’s about alignment, understanding industry trends, matching strengths with opportunities, and making informed decisions that serve both immediate and long-term goals.

Her popular keynote workshop, Finding Fulfillment in a Changing Tech World, walks participants through each phase of career transition, while her one-to-one coaching continues to guide professionals from uncertainty to confidence.

For executives and professionals navigating change, Julia Stegman’s story offers both inspiration and a roadmap. She proves that it’s possible to build success without sacrificing authenticity, and that letting go of certainty can be the most strategic move of all.
