Chinese tourists – Tourists are eager to make up for lost time as the globe slowly returns to routine following the horrific outbreak. While Venice, Paris, and Madrid are popular tourist destinations, Chinese tourists want to broaden their horizons.

With three years of pandemic restrictions finally easing, China's reopening has gained traction. According to the Chinese Outbound Tourism Research Institute, the country's inhabitants are wanting to travel differently. "The Chinese tourists we will welcome this year, and in the coming years, are very different from those who came before," said Wolfgang Georg Arlt, the chief executive of COTRI. According to Arlt, years of lockdowns in China have caused a shift away from popular tourist spots, causing Chinese travelers to seek "more nature-oriented, more outdoor-oriented tourism." He saw an increase in the popularity of camping, glamping, and family-friendly vacations. Arlt specifically mentioned Chinese tourists looking for vacation possibilities within their own homeland. "In the three years of the closure of the country, everybody had to travel domestically – including the rich people – which gave a boost to the domestic tourism industry," he added.

With an enhanced domestic tourism sector, the contributions of Chinese tourists might have a big impact on the worldwide travel market. "It used to be that if you were an important person in China, you had to travel internationally," said Arlt. "If you were traveling domestically, either you were too poor or you were too stupid to travel internationally. This has changed now." Wolfgang Georg Arlt, the head of Hamburg-based sustainable travel consultant Meaningful Tourism Center, remarked that the quality and diversity of domestic travel options had improved. "So, for us, we have to compete not only with other international destinations, we also have to compete with the domestic market," he added.

Resuming travel

According to China's National Bureau of Statistics, around 170 million Chinese tourists traveled abroad in 2019. According to a Ctrip.com report, tourists spent more than $127.5 billion on outbound travel in the first half of 2019. Chinese outbound travel is expected to recoup more than two-thirds of its 2019 highs by 2023. According to COTRI, they predict around 110 million border crossings from China. Yet, hotel company Accor predicts that more than three out of every four Chinese visitors would remain in China. "We anticipate that 70% to 80% of the travelers will stay within China," said Accor global chief commercial officer Karelle Lamouche. "Flight capacity is not yet at the levels of 2019." Several would-be passengers were stranded after China reopened its borders in early January due to a lack of airline capacity. Just 9% of international flights departing China recovered between February 6 and February 12. According to the Alibaba-owned travel booking service Fliggy, Chinese carriers operated 63% of the flights. Likewise, Chinese citizens suffered delays in passport renewal and visa application. There were also temporary travel prohibitions imposed by nations such as Japan and South Korea. "Unless we have the passports, unless we have the visas, we can't be China-ready," said visitBerlin director of market management Ralf Ostendorf. Because of these limitations, countries that can adapt to the changing requirements of Chinese travelers will do favorably. Taiwan, for example, provides visas-on-arrival to fully vaccinated Chinese travelers who have travel insurance. "Thailand becomes the top destination for Chinese customers," noted Fliggy's chief strategy officer and head of corporate development Simeon Shi. He also stated that Thailand had 180,000 Chinese visitors between January and mid-February. Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnivirakul stated in February that he expected roughly 15 million Chinese tourists to come to the country in 2023, accounting for more than half of all incoming arrivals.

Other preferences

Despite expanding independent travel, 55% of Chinese tourists booked abroad trips through group tour operators prior to the pandemic. According to Shi, the trend is unlikely to diminish, even though the services they want have changed. "Even nowadays, most Chinese people don't have a passport," he said. Shi anticipates group tours to remain a key priority for Chinese tourists as the travel sector evolves. Nonetheless, Shi remarked that, as a result of the pandemic, the number of tour providers has decreased, allowing opportunity for new entrants to offer their services. Younger Chinese tourists, for example, might pick a small cafe they discovered online over other prominent attractions. Wolfgang Georg Arlt agreed that firms may profit from offering specialty items and special interest trips to Chinese tourists. "Understand what you have to offer, which segment of the Chinese market is the right one for that, and then offer it," he said. "Don't be afraid of niche markets in China.
