From Champion Sprinter to Champion for Humanity, Merritt Uses His Story—and His Spikes—to Elevate a Cause
At Gatherama 2025™, the noteworthy event celebrating purpose-driven leadership and global transformation, Olympic icon LaShawn Merritt took center stage—not for his speed, but for his dedication. Honored for his contribution to the Ignite Humanity™ book and initiative, Merritt reminded attendees that greatness can be shown not only on the track—but in how we support others.
Held in Salt Lake City, Gatherama 2025 convened visionaries, founders, authors, and changemakers from around the world to share how purpose might be turned into action. LaShawn Merritt, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and World Champion, was recognized at the closing Pink & Precious Gala for his commitment to mentorship, empowerment, and community service.
As part of his meaningful contribution, LaShawn brought a signed Team USA jersey and a pair of his autographed sprinting spikes, worn during one of his international competitions. In a deeply thoughtful gesture, he donated both items to be auctioned off, raising funds to support Ignite Humanity’s important mission to build eco-friendly Inspiration Classrooms™ around the world.

Guests were also invited to take photos with Merritt and even wear his Olympic medal—a moment that moved many deeply. His generosity, openness, and grounded presence left a lasting impact.
“I’ve had the honor of representing my country on the world’s biggest stages,” Merritt shared during his award acceptance. “Now I want to represent what it means to build others up—to empower, educate, and elevate the next generation.”
Merritt’s presence at Gatherama was more than symbolic. During the event’s Alphabet of Possibilities speaker showcase, he delivered a meaningful talk on what he calls the Meritt Mindset—a philosophy rooted in persistence, preparation, and personal accountability. Drawing from the discipline that made him a world-class athlete, he now mentors youth through speed, agility, and mindset training programs that foster not just athletic performance but broader life leadership.
“There’s a difference between talent and transformation,” Merritt told the crowd. “When you cultivate mindset over medals, you create sustainable success.”
The moment echoed the greater purpose of Gatherama 2025: to highlight real people doing extraordinary work through story, service, and conscious leadership. For Merritt, the transition from gold medals to a focus on giving back was a natural one.
His involvement in the Ignite Humanity™ book, a notable compilation led by global thought leader Lady JB Owen, places him among over 280 authors who’ve bravely shared their stories of personal growth, transformation, and contribution. Each chapter is a testament to the belief that storytelling has the power to heal, uplift, and ignite humanity forward.
Lady JB Owen, CEO of Ignite Publishing™ and founder of the Ignite Humanity™ movement, personally invited LaShawn to join the project as a voice of leadership and impact. His journey from Olympic stadiums to community classrooms aligns well with the movement’s mission: to empower individuals to rise above, tell their truth, and change the world one story at a time.
“LaShawn represents the very heart of Ignite Humanity,” Lady JB shared. “He’s taken his platform and transformed it into a message of unity, mentorship, and hope. That’s exactly what the world needs more of.”

Merritt’s chapter in the Ignite Humanity™ book, set for global release later next year, offers a valuable glimpse into the mental toughness, vulnerability, and mindset mastery required to win on the track and in life. It’s a narrative not only about athletic achievements but also about living with purpose, consistency, and a deep desire to give back.
For CEOs and leaders across industries, Merritt’s story is a strong reminder: success should ideally be paired with significance. Whether you run a Fortune 500 company or a grassroots nonprofit, the impact you create often comes from your character, not just your credentials.
