In an industry increasingly dominated by shortcuts and transactional relationships, one broker in Humboldt County is proving that old-fashioned service still holds value. Larry O. Doss, the second-generation owner of Ming Tree Real Estate, has built a career on a simple but powerful philosophy: find solutions for every client and strive to never quit.

A Legacy Built on Trust

Larry’s story begins long before he earned his California Real Estate Sales License in 1995. His father, along with a partner, founded Ming Tree in 1972 with a clear vision: to serve people who wanted solid, honest, knowledgeable real estate professionals they could trust. These weren’t just advisors; they were expert facilitators and highly skilled negotiators who understood that buying or selling property is one of life’s most significant decisions.

When Larry took the reins as the next-generation owner and broker in 2006, he didn’t just inherit a business. He inherited a mission. And he’s been building on that foundation of excellence ever since, working toward the goal of delivering exceptional service in every transaction.

The Numbers Tell a Story

With over 800 successful closed sales since 1995, Larry has consistently ranked as a top-producing agent and broker in Humboldt County. But perhaps the most telling statistic isn’t about volume; it’s about satisfaction. A remarkable 98% customer satisfaction rating, maintained over 20 years of surveys, speaks to something deeper than mere competence. It reflects a commitment to people that goes beyond the transaction.

As broker and manager, Larry has supervised over 4000 sales for the entire Ming Tree Team of professionals. To say he’s experienced would be an understatement. But experience alone doesn’t fully explain his success.

The Art of the Double Win

“I work to find solutions for all of our clients and make sure not to quit,” Larry explains. “Many times, agents can get frustrated and lack the knowledge and determination to persevere. I not only refuse to quit, but I also always look to make the solution a double win, positive for all parties involved in the sale of a home, land, investment, commercial, ranch, or industrial type property.”

This philosophy has been tested countless times. Larry identifies financing and insurance as the toughest challenges for buyers and sellers, obstacles that can sometimes derail even the most promising deals. “Sometimes it takes a third-party advocate to step in and have the tough conversations to move the process along in the least stressful way for my clients,” he notes. This willingness to be that advocate, to navigate the difficult moments, is what sets him apart.

Recognition and Service

Larry’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. His accolades speak volumes about both professional excellence and community commitment: Business Person of the Year from the Eureka Chamber of Commerce in 2015, Citizen of the Year from Hum CPR in 2016, and multiple Best Realtor awards from the Times Standard Readers’ Choice in 2003, 2006, 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2018.

He served as Past President of the Humboldt Association of Realtors in 2007 and Past President of Old Town Rotary from 2010 to 2011. His service extended beyond real estate as a Humboldt Harbor Commissioner from 2015 to 2021 and as a Director of Humboldt Fire District from 1995 to 2003. Currently, he serves as a Board Member for Lutheran Home For The Aging and has been an active Rotarian member of Old Town Rotary since 1989.

National recognition came through multiple National Real Estate Marketing Awards from 2000 to 2009 and 2013, service on the National Broker Advisory Committee for GMAC Real Estate from 2007 to 2010, and as a National Broker Consultant for Real Living Real Estate from 2009 to 2013.

Where Old Meets New

“What’s new is actually old,” Larry says with characteristic insight. “Old-fashioned service has quickly been left behind by much of our competitors, but not at Ming Tree. You can expect Ming Tree professionals to utilize all tools necessary to help in the buying and selling process, combined with old-fashioned personal service. Our mission is to continuously perfect the art of real estate service daily.”

This commitment to perfecting the art—not just practicing the trade—defines the Ming Tree approach. It’s about using every available tool while never forgetting that real estate is fundamentally about people and their dreams.

A Life Well Lived

Beyond the office, Larry’s life reflects the same values of dedication and service. A Traditional Teamster with Draft Horses since 2003 and Natural Grass Fed Cattle Rancher since 2000, he understands the value of land firsthand. He’s also served as a Business Strategy, Value & Revitalization Consultant since 2015 and spent years as an NCAA Football Official from 2000 to 2007, continuing with NCFOA & NFHS from 1992 to present.

Most importantly, he’s been married to “a super star” since 2002 and is dad to three fantastic young adults, roles he clearly treasures above all others.

Larry O. Doss represents something increasingly rare: a professional who measures success not just in closed deals but in satisfied clients, strengthened communities, and solutions that work for everyone involved. In his hands, real estate isn’t just a transaction. It’s an art form, constantly perfected.
