Memphis, TN – In a dynamic return that combines legacy with renewed vision, the Memphis In May International Festival has proudly reappointed Howard Robertson, Jr. as Chair of its Board of Directors. A transformative leader with more than 50 years of impact across marketing, media, and advocacy, Robertson steps back into the role at a pivotal time for one of Memphis’ most celebrated cultural institutions.
This isn’t just a symbolic homecoming, it’s a strategic one. Robertson first served as Chair in 2007, leading Memphis In May through one of its most successful seasons in history. Over the past 20+ years, he has been an integral force on the board, helping guide the festival through transitions while honoring its mission of celebrating global culture and Memphis heritage.
Now, as the city and the festival enter a new era, Robertson’s return signals a forward-thinking approach rooted in equity, innovation, and deep community engagement.
Robertson is no stranger to transformative leadership. He is the CEO and co-founder of Trust Marketing & Communications, a marketing and public relations consulting agency headquartered in Memphis. Under his direction, Trust Marketing has become one of the most respected Black-owned firms in the region. Trust successfully works with national brands, governmental and quasi-governmental agencies, charitable institutions, and grassroots organizations. During more than 50 years of exposures and experience, Robertson has consistently used media platforms to advance public good through strategic messaging and meaningful storytelling.
A proud graduate of The Lincoln University (PA)—America’s first Historically Black College—Robertson has carried his alma mater’s legacy of excellence and service throughout every chapter of his career.
His forward-thinking mindset has also led to the development of two innovative companies under the Trust banner: the Spotset Radio Network and Play Ode. Spotset is the largest advertising network of Black and independently owned radio stations in the country, representing 112 stations nationwide. Meanwhile, the newly launched Play Ode (Our Digital Entertainment) app delivers curated Black radio programming and podcasts to audiences everywhere, preserving culture while adapting to a digital future.
Robertson’s leadership extends far beyond the boardroom. In addition to his work with Memphis In May, he is an active member of numerous local and national organizations and non-profit boards. He currently serves on the board of the Memphis Jazz Workshop and is a Commissioner on the Tennessee Arts Commission, and other philanthropic endeavors. A lifelong advocate for Memphis culture and education, he is also deeply committed to mentoring emerging talent and creating pathways for the next generation of creatives, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. He is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Colleagues and collaborators describe Robertson as visionary yet grounded—someone who leads by listening, builds consensus, and elevates those around him. His leadership style is marked by integrity, collaboration, and an unwavering belief in Memphis as a city of promise, soul, and innovation.
