Women have broken barriers across diverse fields, including entrepreneurship. They have navigated the challenges of male-dominated industries and redefined societal expectations. Their resilience and adaptability have made them pioneers of change, and their stories must be told. Elaine A. Clark, a trailblazing woman entrepreneur who impacted countless individuals, shares her story of courage and determination, illustrating how one can push boundaries while balancing one’s personal and professional lives.

Besides being an accomplished speech communication coach, Clark is an author, app creator, and podcaster. She has delved into various disciplines, including acting, audio engineering, casting, directing, and voiceovers in her 40-year career. Her extensive experience has shaped her multifaceted approach to improving people’s performances across different platforms.

Clark’s education was pivotal to her groundbreaking career. She pursued Theater, Speech Communication, and Education at Centenary College of Louisiana, equipping her with foundational knowledge in various fields. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree, Clark moved to San Francisco, immediately realizing that while there are numerous acting opportunities in the city, they demand time commitment.

The multifaceted woman then explored the voiceover industry, where she could utilize her acting skills without needing to attend lengthy rehearsals and numerous performances. However, she recognized a gap: during the 1980s, formal training in voiceover was scarce. Motivated to pave a path in an emerging market, she made it her mission to provide a structured learning environment for aspiring professionals. Utilizing her educational background, Clark founded Voice One in San Francisco in 1980s, considered the first voice-over school of its kind. Clark sold the voice-over training division more than 30 years later. However, Elaine continues what she started to this day by coaching countless newscasters, business executives, sports announcers, sales teams and voice actors.

Clark faced an unexpected challenge soon after starting her business. Already a mother of two young children, she added a third child to her workload management. Ever the problem solver, Clark says, “I knew I could make it work.” Make it work she did—managing her time meticulously and balancing motherhood, business and entrepreneurship.

“I worked remotely (at that time it was forwarding your office phone to your home) when necessary, and built a community of support with friends and neighbors who helped take care of my children,” Clark adds. She adhered to a rigorous routine that kept her business thriving and instilled a strong work ethic in her children, teaching them to be resilient problem solvers. As an innovative entrepreneur, mother of three, and problem solver, these experiences made Clark more compassionate and develop a laser-focused approach. These qualities, she believes, are essential for everyone delving into entrepreneurship.

It’s worth noting that her own family and the trailblazing women in her life, deeply influenced Clark. Her maternal grandmother and great-grandmother were highly resilient women. After being widowed, they raised their children alone and passed along their values of education and the arts. Even Clark’s mother followed this path and became a librarian after going back to school while raising her children. “I credit these amazing women in my life for shaping my belief that women can—and should—do it all,” she shares.

Now, Clark continues to impact people from different fields. She leads by example, ensuring to stay ahead of the curve by embracing new tools and trends. The visionary believes doing so is critical, especially with the communication industry shifting following the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies.

Still, Clark notes that human communication requires emotional depth and nuance—things AI can’t provide. She applies the principles of the rhetorical triangle—ethos, pathos, and logos—to balance credibility, emotion, and logic in communication. “AI is useful, but it can’t replicate the emotional resonance or authority that comes from a human performance,” she stresses.

Clark’s ability to employ traditional communication techniques in her work while acknowledging the benefits of modern technology is what makes her a trailblazer. She has always had a knack for envisioning solutions that didn’t exist but were clearly needed. This instinctual drive to fill a gap in the industry has allowed her to innovate.

The industry expert didn’t stop after establishing a school. When she discovered many people were flatlining their messages, she wrote There’s Money Where Your Mouth Is: A Complete Insider’s Guide to Earning Income and Building a Career in Voice-Overs. This book is a guide for aspiring voice actors and professionals. Clark has consistently identified gaps and filled them with tools, systems, and resources. She also authored Voice-Overs for Podcasting: How to Develop a Career and Make a Profit, which aims to help a new generation of podcasters develop their craft and unleash their creativity.

Her books were followed by the launch of her own podcast and YouTube series, Real Talking Tips. Here, Clark distills complex communication concepts into easily digestible lessons. The woman of many hats also created apps like Activate Your Voice and Adding Melody to Your Voice to provide professionals with practical tools to warm up their voices and improve the musicality of their speech.

Reflecting on her impact and professional success, Clark still emphasizes the significance of balancing between family and career. She learned this through her experiences and observing others in her field. Clark shares: “I remember interviewing people about their jobs and noticed the obvious difference between those who loved their work and those who were simply working for money. I knew I didn’t want to be someone clocking in hours for a paycheck; I wanted my work to be fulfilling. As I followed my passion, I began creating more.”

The accomplished professional acknowledges that balance isn’t always to “maintain”. She says, “Achieving balance in life means accepting that sometimes things will be out of alignment, and we must learn to prioritize and let go when necessary. Family should always come first, but to support your family, it’s essential to pursue meaningful and fulfilling work.”

Elaine A. Clark’s illustrious career path, from her early days of founding the first voiceover school to developing tools, writing books, launching podcasts, and building apps, has impacted the communication industry. Her commitment to balancing family, career, and relationships distinguishes her, allowing her to create a legacy that inspires everyone who crosses her path.
