Rusty Rasmus has been helping people buy and sell homes in Northwest Iowa since 2003. That is more than two decades of answering phone calls, walking families through tough decisions, and being there when it matters. He works out of Rasmus Realty, a company that has been serving the region since 2002, and he has built his entire career around one simple idea: treat people the way you would want to be treated.

For Rusty, real estate is not about closing deals. It is about helping people move forward in life. Whether someone is buying their first home, selling a family property, or trying to figure out what to do with an investment, he sees every situation as a puzzle that needs solving.

ā€œMy approach is simple: be honest, be available, and do what you say you’re going to do,ā€ Rusty explained. ā€œFaith, family, and service are a big part of who I am, and they guide how I treat every client relationship.ā€

More Than Just an Agent

What makes Rusty different from other agents in the area is that he is also an active investor. He does not just give advice based on theory. He has bought properties, managed them, and dealt with the same challenges his clients face. That real-world experience gives him a perspective that most agents simply do not have.

Through his work with Waymaker Properties, Rusty has been developing alternative paths to homeownership, including lease option programs for people who may not qualify for traditional financing. It is something he is especially passionate about because it fills a real gap in the market. Not everyone fits into the standard mortgage box, and Rusty believes those people still deserve a shot at owning a home.

Guiding People Through Transitions

His ideal clients are often going through some kind of transition. Maybe they are buying their first house. Maybe they are downsizing after the kids have moved out. Maybe a job change or a divorce has put them in unfamiliar territory. A lot of these people feel overwhelmed or frustrated because the traditional process does not fit their situation.

ā€œWhere I come in is by helping simplify that process and giving them clarity,ā€ Rusty said. ā€œI take the time to understand their goals, lay out their options in plain language, and help them choose the path that actually works best for them.ā€

The goal, he explained, is for clients to walk away with confidence and peace of mind. They should feel like they made a smart decision and had someone in their corner advocating for them the entire time. At the end of the day, he wants them to achieve their real estate goal and feel like they have a trusted partner helping them get there.

A Growing Team and Expanding Reach

Rasmus Realty has been growing steadily over the past year. What was once a small group of agents has expanded into a larger, more dynamic team. They recently brought on a bilingual agent to better serve the Spanish-speaking community in the area, which has been a meaningful step toward making their services more accessible across the region. The company is also expanding beyond Cherokee into surrounding communities, building stronger relationships and partnerships along the way.

In 2025, Rusty achieved the top agent for volume of sales in Cherokee County. It is an accomplishment he is grateful for, though he is quick to point out that it is a reflection of his clients, their referrals, and the people around him who help make it all possible. He credits the team he works alongside and the trust that clients have placed in him over the years.

Consistency Over Volume

ā€œWhat I’m most proud of isn’t just volume or numbers,ā€ he said. ā€œIt’s the consistency. Year after year, we’ve been able to help a wide range of clients navigate everything from first-time home purchases to complex situations like estates, relocations, and investment properties.ā€

That kind of longevity, he noted, only happens when people continue to trust you and come back to work with you again. Being deeply rooted in the communities he serves allows Rusty to understand the local market in a way that goes beyond the numbers. He knows the people. He knows the neighborhoods. He knows what makes Northwest Iowa different from anywhere else.

ā€œI’m not here for one deal,ā€ Rusty said. ā€œI’m here to be a long-term resource, and someone people can trust to give honest advice, even when it’s not the easiest answer.ā€

For Rusty, the goal goes beyond completing a transaction. He wants to help people move forward in life. After more than twenty years in the business, that mission has not changed.
