Kristen Kitaji knows the Monterey Peninsula the way only someone born and raised there can. As the founder of IKONIK Realty in Carmel, California, she brings a combination of deep local knowledge, business expertise, and genuine care for her clients to every transaction. Her approach is quiet, thoughtful, and grounded in the belief that buying or selling a home should ideally never feel rushed or impersonal.
From Tech and Agriculture to Real Estate
Before entering real estate, Kristen built a career that spanned technology and agriculture. She earned an MBA in marketing and entrepreneurship from Pepperdine University, along with a specialized certificate in Socially, Environmentally, and Ethically Responsible Business Strategy. She lived and worked abroad in London, gaining international experience in product development, and when returning to the states, continued her journey in product management, collaborated with executives at the highest levels, and managed international estates. When she eventually returned to her hometown to pursue real estate, she brought all of that experience with her.
The decision to change careers was driven by both passion and practicality. She loved touring homes and wanted work that offered more flexibility after having children. But there was something deeper, too. “I was drawn to this path because I’ve always believed that home is more than a place,” she explained. “It’s where we heal, grow, and begin again.”
What Makes Carmel Different
Carmel is not a market that can be understood through online listings or general real estate advice. Value can shift dramatically from one street to the next, influenced by orientation, architectural character, proximity to the coast, and zoning regulations that require careful navigation. Kristen sees her role as helping clients understand these nuances so they can make informed decisions with confidence.
“In Carmel, value can shift dramatically from one street to the next,” she said. “Taking the time to understand these nuances can lead to better decisions.”
For buyers, this means identifying potential concerns early, whether maintenance issues, coastal conditions, or long-term resale considerations. For sellers, especially those with unique properties where traditional comparables may not always be applicable, it involves thoughtful pricing and positioning. Her goal is to simplify a complex process and remove unnecessary stress.
Lessons from the Hard Times

Kristen is candid about the mistakes she made early in her career. She believed that working harder alone would guarantee success. She said yes to everything, carried too much on her own, and tied her self-worth to outcomes she could not fully control. When deals fell apart or momentum slowed, she took it personally.
“Those moments were humbling but necessary,” she said. “They taught me to slow down, set boundaries, trust collaboration, and focus on the quality of guidance I provide rather than chasing perfection.”
Growing IKONIK Beyond Sales
When Kristen founded IKONIK Realty, she had two goals in mind. The first was to create an unparalleled real estate experience focused on service and forward-thinking ideology. The second was to help next-generation agents grow their business and network. Since opening in 2022, the team has been recognized among the top real estate teams in America and California by volume and sides according to Real Trends. Kristen was also fortunate enough to close a record $18.4 million sale on Scenic Drive in Carmel.
More recently, she has expanded into property management through IKONIK Property Management, which handles short and long-term rentals. She also launched IKONIK Concierge Services to help clients who live out of the area maintain and watch over their homes while they are away.
Staying Present
When asked what comes next, Kristen does not talk about aggressive expansion or market domination. Instead, she talks about relationships. “I want my clients to feel cared for, heard, and supported,” she said. “Trust grows in the quieter moments, when I slow down to listen, when I’m honest about what isn’t right, and when I put someone’s peace of mind ahead of the transaction.”
She lives in Carmel with her husband, two children, two French Bulldogs, a rescue dog from Hawaii, and a Bengal cat. When she is not working, you can find her at the beach, hiking along the coast, playing tennis, coaching her kids’ soccer, softball, and flag football teams, or cooking for friends and family. The life she has built mirrors the life she helps her clients find: rooted, intentional, and full of meaning.
