In a world overflowing with fitness influencers and transient wellness trends, few trainers stand out for both their authenticity and longevity. For Alex Verdugo, fitness isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s about discipline, resilience, and purpose. From humble beginnings in Chula Vista to owning one of Southern California’s most motivational training spaces, his journey is a testament to grit and vision. “I always kind of grew up around it,” Verdugo recalls. “My dad was an old-school bodybuilder, and my mom was an endurance athlete who ran marathons and half marathons. Just seeing both of them growing up inspired me to get into that realm.” Fitness was never just a phase for Verdugo — it was in his DNA. Watching his father sculpt muscle and his mother conquer miles instilled in him a work ethic that would later fuel his own success story. Verdugo’s professional journey began like many others — inside a commercial gym. But it didn’t take long for him to realize his motivation went beyond sales or numbers. “When I first became a personal trainer, I saw a lot of people treat it like a business — which, of course, it is,” he says. “But for me, I fell in love with the change I could help people achieve. Watching someone go from 300 pounds to 225, or even lower, in just a few months — that process is an amazing journey.”
While earning his business management degree at San Diego State University, Verdugo was already plotting his next move. “I knew I wanted to do something in business, but I didn’t know what yet,” he says. “Once I realized fitness was my path, I turned my garage into a private studio.” From there, he began leading group workouts in a local park before saving enough — with help from his mother — to open his first gym, a 1,400-square-foot studio dedicated to kettlebell and TRX functional training. That small, humble space became the foundation for what is now one of the most energetic and community-driven gyms in Southern California. Through hard work, persistence, and an unwavering belief in his purpose, Verdugo transformed obstacles into opportunities. Each challenge he faced only fueled his drive to grow and evolve. His journey is defined not by setbacks, but by his ability to rise, rebuild, and create something greater every single time. That resilience became the backbone of his success — a living example of the mindset he now instills in his clients.
Walk into Verdugo’s gym, and you’ll immediately feel the energy he’s cultivated. “It’s black, red, industrial — but more than the look, it’s the atmosphere,” he says. “The people who come here are driven. They know what they want to do. They’re not wasting time on their phones — they’re here to handle business.” The result is a culture where everyone feeds off each other’s intensity. “You just feel it when you walk in,” he adds. “People are dedicated, motivated, and we make sure to provide great customer service. That combination makes it special.” For Verdugo, proper fitness is more than muscle. “There’s no point in having all these muscles if you can’t move,” he says. “My philosophy is to be aesthetically nice but also very functional — all-around strong and efficient.” His programs are as diverse as his clientele — from moms chasing toddlers to professionals balancing high-stress careers. “You never know when you’ll need your strength,” he explains. “It’s about being ready — physically and mentally — for anything life throws at you.”
His approach to personal training begins with connection. “Like a doctor, you can’t prescribe something that isn’t meant for the person,” Verdugo says. “I take time to get to know my clients, ask questions, and develop a plan that fits them.” That personal connection is also what helps him motivate those who struggle with consistency. “The hardest part is walking through the door,” he admits. “Once they’re here, they feel the energy. My goal is to give them a reason to want to come back.” Verdugo believes mindset is the foundation of every transformation. “Your mind is what pushes you — it’s what keeps you going,” he says. “If the mind falls apart, if it’s not in it, your body won’t achieve anything. It all starts from there.” This mental discipline extends to his own life as a trainer and entrepreneur. Balancing a demanding schedule means relying on structure, smart nutrition, and an unbreakable mindset. “Some days, the last thing I want to do is train,” he admits. “But once I start, I’m fine. You just have to push past that small hurdle.”
Beyond the workouts, Verdugo has built a thriving culture around commitment and drive. “People come here because they want to be here,” he says. “You walk in and the energy hits you — it’s radiating. You see models, influencers, doctors, lawyers — all here handling business. That’s the kind of crowd we attract.” By setting his prices slightly higher than the average gym, he ensures that his clientele reflects the same intensity. “They’re dedicated. They’re ready to work,” he says. Verdugo’s mornings start early — around 4:30 a.m. — with quiet time and reading before classes begin at 6. His days are filled with personal training sessions, client consultations, and overseeing multiple in-house ventures, including a nutrition store, juice bar, Pilates program, and recovery center. “Basically, I’m babysitting,” he laughs. “Making sure everything’s on task and looking for the next venture.”
When asked what advice he’d give to those just starting their fitness journey, his answer reflects the resilience that defines him: “You cannot listen to anybody who doesn’t share the same motivation or dream as you,” he says. “Throughout my journey, I’ve heard a thousand no’s. People told me what I wanted was impossible. But anybody who said no, I’ve been able to prove them wrong. If you really want something, there’s no reason you can’t have it.” Alex Verdugo’s story isn’t just about building muscle or opening gyms — it’s about perseverance, belief, and building people from the inside out. His approach to fitness, rooted in functionality, mindset, and community, sets a new standard for what it means to be a true leader in the fitness industry.
