What happens when an architect of spaces becomes a designer of the future? For Shreya Thakkar, it’s a seamless transition, blending the physical and digital to create products that reshape how we interact with the world. With over seven years of experience in design research and strategy, Shreya has impacted industries from home appliances to healthcare, automotive, and even furniture manufacturing.
Shreya’s journey began far from the world of tech. Born in a small town in Gujarat, India, her fascination with design was sparked by a childhood spent creating art and reading mythology. This deep connection to storytelling and imagination laid the groundwork for her future career. Early in her career, Shreya’s interests led her to interior architecture, where she designed spatial experiences for residential spaces, places of worship, and commercial environments. However, her desire to understand how design could shape behavior and improve lives pushed her to pursue a master’s in Environmental Design, focusing on furniture and industrial design.
During her studies, Shreya’s master’s thesis, “Engaging in Aging,” stood out as a reflection of her unique approach. She developed a collection of mobility aids designed to enhance the quality of life for aging baby boomers, demonstrating her commitment to human-centered design from the very start.
Over the years, her curiosity deepened, leading her to initiate a research project known as “Anotherism.” This initiative sought to compare human ingenuity with AI-generated solutions for everyday household challenges. Through this endeavor, Shreya explored the delicate balance between human creativity and the power of emerging technologies, a recurring theme in her work.
As a thought leader, Shreya’s expertise lies in blending the physical and digital worlds. She specializes in UX and design research, crafting products that enhance the human experience by connecting tangible items with digital interfaces. Her work is driven by a fundamental question: How can we use AI to complement human ingenuity without replacing it?
However, Shreya’s path has not been without its challenges. Growing up in a world where design wasn’t seen as a conventional career, she had to fight against societal expectations. Even today, as technology advances at breakneck speed, she faces the challenge of balancing human needs with technological possibilities. In every project, she reminds herself—and her clients—that the human experience must come first.
Shreya’s relentless curiosity and willingness to engage in difficult conversations have earned her recognition, including her role as a judge for The Globee Awards for Leadership in 2024. She has also worked closely with Fortune 500 companies, helping them envision and design products that meet both current demands and future possibilities.
When asked about her lessons, Shreya emphasizes the importance of empathy in design. For her, empathy is not merely a tool but the very foundation of bold design. By staying user-centered and courageous, designers can create experiences that genuinely improve lives.
Looking to the future, Shreya envisions herself leading initiatives focusing on AI’s ethical integration into design research. She aims to ensure that technology is used responsibly and inclusively, all while mentoring future design leaders. She aims to continue pushing forward with phygital products, crafting solutions that meet both present and future needs.
Shreya remains driven by the same force that sparked her career in Gujarat: an insatiable curiosity and a passion for storytelling. Whether designing a chair or developing an AI-driven solution, Shreya Thakkar remains a leader in innovation, always listening, learning, and imagining what comes next.
