Fabian Matthews began his illustrious career after graduating from Arkansas State University’s School of Radio and Television in 1995. Even before completing his degree, he started honing his skills in 1994 at KAIT TV in Jonesboro, Arkansas. There, Matthews took on the roles of Producer and Director, where he was responsible for writing, shooting, and editing commercial advertisements. His versatility was evident as he also produced and directed both long and short format programs, including the Arkansas State University (ASU) Coaches’ shows and other entertainment-oriented programming for the station. This early experience laid the foundation for his future success, giving him a well-rounded understanding of the various aspects of television production.
In 1997, Matthews took a significant step in his career by moving to WMC TV5 in Memphis, Tennessee, where he became the Senior Commercial Producer and Avid Editor. At WMC TV5, he continued to excel in writing, producing, shooting, and editing commercial advertisements and public service announcements (PSAs). Additionally, his role expanded to include overseeing special projects, news series, and series promotions. As the Senior Avid Editor, Matthews was entrusted with some of the station’s critical tasks, showcasing his ability to handle complex and high-profile projects.
The desire to push creative boundaries and take control of his professional destiny led Matthews to entrepreneurship. In 1999, along with his two business partners, founded Spotlight Productions, Inc. in Memphis. The venture was ambitious combining the expertise of three industry veterans to establish a full-service video and film production studio. The studio also boasted interactive and web development capabilities, positioning Spotlight Productions as a cutting-edge firm in the media industry. This move marked the beginning of a new chapter in Matthews’ career, where he could fully express his creative vision and leadership.
Today, as the sole owner and President of Spotlight Productions, Fabian Matthews continues to drive the company’s success. He manages all executive functions, including acquiring new business, concept development, and production oversight for major projects. Matthews is not just a creative force; he is also a savvy businessman, responsible for marketing the company, procuring clients, and fostering long-lasting relationships. His work has also earned him 19 Telly Awards in various categories, including documentary filmmaking, between 1998 and 2016. Additionally, Matthews has been honored with a National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Regional Award for Public Affairs in 1998. These accolades are a testament to his skill, creativity, and dedication to excellence in media production.

He was a member of the Leadership Memphis Class of 2010, an experience that likely deepened his connection to the city and its people.
