By: Lennard James Commissioner Mickell Lowery, elected to the County Commission in 2018, has proven to be a steadfast advocate for the residents of District 8 in Memphis, Tennessee which includes Downtown, Frayser, South Memphis, and Central Gardens. Beyond his political role, Mickell's commitment to community service, extensive involvement in various boards, and remarkable professional accomplishments reflect a leader dedicated to making a positive impact. Born into a family of public servants, Mickell is the son of former Memphis City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Myron Lowery. His educational journey includes a bachelor's degree in business from LeMoyne-Owen College and a Master's degree in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas, laying the groundwork for his impressive career and community contributions. Commissioner Lowery's commitment to the community extends beyond his political duties. He serves on the Board of Trustees for LeMoyne-Owen College and the Board of Directors for the Fire Museum of Memphis. As the Past-President of the Downtown Neighborhood Association, he actively works towards the betterment of the local community. Mickell's dedication is further evident in his 11-year tenure as a youth football coach, volunteering in various youth associations, including Collierville, Bartlett, and Whitehaven. Mickell's involvement as a youth mentor for Charjean Elementary School and his contribution to after-school tutoring programs at multiple schools with the A+ Learning Academy showcases his commitment to education and mentorship. Mickell Lowery's professional journey spans 20 years with FedEx, where he has held positions in Global Product Marketing, IT Strategy management, and U.S. Sales. Currently serving as a District Sales Manager, he has received prestigious awards such as the FedEx Five Star Award (given to the top 2% of employees) and the FedEx Sales Ambassadors Award (awarded to the top 10% of sales leaders). Mickell has garnered several accolades for his outstanding contributions, including being named in Memphis Business Journal's Top 40 Under 40 and Ebony Magazine's Top 30 Under 30. Diversity MBA Magazine and Memphis Crosswords Magazine have also recognized him for his extensive community service and professional accomplishments. Commissioner Lowery's leadership skills are further evidenced by his graduation from the Leadership Memphis Executive Class and his status as a New Memphis Institute Fellow and alumni of Nexus Leadership. Elected to the Democratic State Executive Committee in Senate District 29 with an impressive vote count of over 12,000, Mickell continues to contribute to the political landscape of the region.
