“When several of their own fall prey to Percival’s (guest star Chris O’Shea) latest plan, Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) calls upon fellow witch Sabrina Spellman (guest star Kiernan Shipka) for help,” writes the official episode synopsis. “Elsewhere, Percival gives Reggie (Charles Melton) an ultimatum.”
The trailer revealed that Sabrina Spellman would be visiting Riverdale to help bring Jughead and Archie back from the dead.
The first Archie story to feature witchcraft and necromancy appeared in the comic series Afterlife with Archie. The plot revolves around the survivors of Riverdale trying to escape from the zombie apocalypse born in their town.
The onset of the apocalypse began when Jughead sought the help of Sabrina to bring Hot Dog back from death after he had been run over by Reggie Mantle in a fit of jealousy and rage.
Despite being banned from practicing necromancy, Sabrina does what she can – only to bring back an undead Hot Dog who bites Jughead. This sets off the zombie apocalypse in the town of Riverdale.
As a punishment for breaking the rule, Aunts Hilda and Zelda punish Sabrina by offering her as Cthulhu’s bride.
The grim story obviously strays from the typical Archie comics’ stories, and its success paved the way for Archie Horror titles like the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (the inspiration for the Netflix show), Jughead: The Hunger, Vampironica, and Blossoms 666.
Afterlife with Archie was born from the mind of writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa with illustrations by Francesco Francavilla.
Although the plot is too far-fetched, fans will be eager to see how much of Afterlife with Archie will have influenced the Witches of Riverdale plot.
