North Korea – North Korea reportedly tested an underwater drone capable of carrying a nuclear warhead capable of causing a radioactive wave on Friday. While the news may be concerning, experts have mainly remained dubious. They pointed out that the claims lacked evidence.

The news

According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the drone is known as the "Unmanned Underwater Nuclear Attack Craft Haeil." The drone was tested between March 21 and 23, sailing off the east coast of the nation for nearly 59 hours before detonating its test warhead on Thursday afternoon. "The mission of the underwater nuclear strategic weapon is to stealthily infiltrate into operational waters and make a super-scale radioactive tsunami through underwater explosion to destroy naval striker groups and major operational ports of the enemy," the reports said. According to the KCNA report, the weapon has been under development since 2012 and has undergone more than 50 testing in the last two years. The current test confirmed the drone's dependability and safety, as well as its capacity to carry out a devastating hit. According to the source, the drone may be launched from any port or towed by a surface ship.

Doubt

While the drone's capabilities appear terrifying on paper, several analysts are skeptical of its veracity. North Korea has not provided confirmation of the drone, according to Leif-Eric Easley, an associate professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. "Pyongyang's latest claim to have a nuclear-capable underwater drone should be met with skepticism," said Easley. North Korea allegedly published a video in March showcasing their supposed new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Experts would later dismiss the claims. Nuclear policy specialist Ankit Panda of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace wrote: "I tend to take North Korea seriously, but I can't rule out the possibility that this is an attempt at deception." Panda also said it would be unwise to distribute limited fissile material for a warhead in underwater drones compared to road-mobile ballistic missiles. The concept

Others considered having unmanned submersible craft outside of North Korea. Russia also claimed to have created a comparable device known as the Poseidon torpedo. It is a nuclear-powered autonomous underwater craft launched from a submarine that can carry conventional and nuclear bombs. The nuclear propulsion engine of the Poseidon provides it with nearly infinite range. Nevertheless, Russia has not provided any evidence of a successful test, and many say deployment may take years. Meanwhile, the North Korean weapon differs significantly from the Poseidon. For example, because it is traditionally powered, it is not launched from the sub.

Missile tests

According to reports, the North Korean drone test claim coincided with Pyongyang's announcement that it conducted nuclear-capable cruise missile tests this week. Four subsonic missiles struck their objectives in the East Sea (Sea of Japan). On Wednesday, KCNA reported flying oval and figure-8 patterns of 932 and 1,118 miles (1,500 and 1,800 kilometers) before hitting their targets. According to the report, the Wednesday drill also allowed strategic cruise missile units to familiarize themselves with the procedures and processes required to carry out tactical nuclear attack missions. The Rodong Sinmun website published images of cruise missiles and underwater drones. According to the KCNA article, Pyongyang's nuclear weapons development was a required countermeasure to the military provocations increased by US and South Korean authorities.
