Batteries — Because of its high energy density and rechargeability, lithium-ion batteries are widely employed in electronic gadgets. They are, however, prone to malfunction and overheating, which can result in fires and explosions. The most common reason for battery failure is the formation of lithium metal dendrites, which can puncture the separator and produce a short circuit. Overcharging, physical damage, and high temperature exposure can all cause the battery to overheat and catch fire. Battery makers adopt safety precautions such as temperature and voltage monitors, protective coatings, and fire retardants to prevent these events. Regular maintenance and appropriate treatment of electrical gadgets can help reduce the likelihood of battery failure.

Legislation

Several New York Democrats recently expressed support for federal legislation aimed at regulating lithium-ion battery safety standards. The statement came after a string of incidents caused by defective or overheated batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are most often seen in consumer items such as e-scooters and cellphones. They were recently scrutinized after reports of explosive fires triggered by the batteries, which contain combustible components.

Incidents

After months of instances, New York decided to embrace safeguards. In early March, a five-alarm fire broke out in New York City's Bronx area, injuring seven people. The fire was started, according to fire officials, by a lithium-ion battery. Almost 200 firemen fought to extinguish the fire. FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh revealed that a lithium-ion battery used to power a scooter was to blame. "In all of these fires, these lithium-ion fires, it is not a slow burn – there's not a small amount of fire, it literally explodes," said Kavanagh. "It's a tremendous volume of fire as soon as it happens, and it's very difficult to extinguish and so it's particularly dangerous." When a lithium-ion battery exploded in November 2022, a Manhattan apartment complex caught fire. Safety standards

Late in March, the United States House of Representatives presented the "Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act." The Act established federal safety requirements for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes and electric scooters. The measure also establishes standards to safeguard customers from potential fires caused by lithium-ion batteries. At a press conference on Sunday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, stated: "Without federal legislation, and so many of these batteries come from across state lines or made overseas or made in China, we will not have a complete and strong solution." Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York mirrored his thoughts, saying: "We cannot allow for faulty or improperly manufactured batteries to keep causing these dangerous, deadly fires." During the news conference, Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh disclosed that in 2023, there were 63 fires and five deaths in New York caused by lithium-ion batteries.

Public safety

Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-NY, introduced the new lithium-ion battery safety measure in March. He described the legislation as a precaution to safeguard lives and property. Torrid went on to suggest that the recent incident served as a reminder of the growing threat that lithium-ion batteries posed to public safety, saying: "I'm grateful to the hundreds of first responders who continue to bravely respond to these incidents and do all they can to save lives and property, but the time has come for the federal government to act because this problem is not isolated to just New York." "We must work to create and implement national safety standards for lithium-ion batteries in order to protect people and places from unreasonable risk, serious injury or damage, and/or death." Officials revealed two lithium-ion battery-related fatalities two weeks earlier. According to authorities, an e-bike caught fire in a building entryway, and the flames exploded to a higher level, blocking the escape. Fire Marshal Dan Flynn of the New York City Fire Department said the Queens event was the 59th lithium-ion battery-related fire the department has put out. In addition, the fire department urged households on the following safety precautions:
