The heir to the throne spoke with a voice filled with emotion this weekend, calling on citizens for action. He noted how urgent it is that we protect and restore our planet before it is too late.
In his speech, the Prince described how progress had been connected to environmental degradation over the past century. He gave the speech last Saturday during the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
“In that time, mankind has benefited from unimaginable technological developments and scientific breakthroughs,” the heir to the throne recalls.
“And although those breakthroughs have increased our awareness of the impact humans have on our world, our planet has become more fragile.”
“Today, in 2022, as the queen celebrates her Platinum Jubilee, the pressing need to protect and restore our planet has never been more urgent,” the Prince added.
Motivated by the same vision, the Duke of Cambridge vouched for his support in the Prince’s call, saying that environmental protection and preservation are the “top global agenda.’
The Duke added that in order for the environmental movement to prosper, it is crucial that we involve younger people in protecting the planet.
It did not come as a surprise that Prince William expressed his opinions on the matter. In 2021, the Prince became vocal on the issues relating to climate change and space tourism.
The environment is in a crisis, and many nations are using fossil fuels that contribute greatly to its destruction. The call from Prince William could not have come at a more timely moment, considering how important it would be for a prominent figure to be speaking out regarding the issue.
The International Energy Agency recently reported that global CO2 emissions from energy production reached a new high this year. The 36 billion metric tons recorded is one of the highest on record and indicates a huge increase in CO2 emissions over the years.
The problem at hand is a mammoth, but the Prince is confident that when people work together for the common cause and support each other in times of need or difficulty, they can overcome any obstacle.
“Together, if we harness the very best of humankind and restore our planet, we will protect it for our children, for our grandchildren and for future generations to come.”
“They will be able to say with pride at what’s been achieved: ‘What a wonderful world.’”
