The United States’ President, Joe Biden, has tested positive for Covid-19.

The president is experiencing very mild symptoms from his vaccination, according to Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. The 79-year-old chief executive has since received vaccines against Covid-19 and has already been administered with two booster shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Here is a statement from the White House:

This morning, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19. He is fully vaccinated and twice boosted and experiencing very mild symptoms. He has begun taking Paxlovid. Consistent with CDC guidelines, he will isolate at the White House and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time.

He has been in contact with members of the White House staff by phone this morning and will participate in his planned meetings at the White House this morning via phone and Zoom from the residence.

Consistent with White House protocol for positive COVID cases, which goes above and beyond CDC guidance, he will continue to work in isolation until he tests negative. Once he tests negative, he will return to in-person work.

“Folks, I’m doing great. Thanks for your concern,” said the president thru his Twitter account. The caption is posted along with a photo of him. This is a way for the president to show that despite his current state, he will still be discharging his job as the country’s president.

In another post, Biden stood on the balcony of the White House and took a video of him saying, “Keep the faith, it’s going to be okay.”

The president has been taking Pfizer’s Paxlovid to help him stay healthy during this time. This antiviral pill lessens the risk of hospitalization and complications for people who test positive for Covid-19, so it’s important that he stays on these drugs as much as possible.

President Joe Biden has been experiencing some symptoms of illness, including dry cough and runny nose, said the White House physician, Kevin O’Connor. He said that the president also feels fatigued. “I anticipate that he will respond favorably, as most maximally protected patients do,” O’Connor assured the press.

Jill Biden, the president’s wife and the first lady of the US told the public that even with the symptoms her husband is feeling, he is “feeling good.”

“I talked to him just a few minutes ago, he’s doing fine,” said Jill in an interview. The first lady is considered a close contact with the president. When tested with the virus, Jill tested negative.

The president is currently isolated and will remain quarantined until an authorized medical official declares him free of Covid. Meanwhile, all meetings with the president regarding matters of state will be postponed for the time being. However, he continues working on other projects and issues while awaiting clearance.

The White House official statement added:

Out of an abundance of transparency, the White House will provide a daily update on the president’s status as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation.

Per standard protocol for any positive case at the White House, the White House Medical Unit will inform all close contacts of the president during the day today, including any Members of Congress and any members of the press who interacted with the president during yesterday’s travel. The president’s last previous test for COVID was Tuesday when he had a negative test result.

What the president did before testing positive

President Joe Biden attended an event Wednesday in Massachusetts addressing climate change where he was with lawmakers and officials, including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Market, and other luminaries in the scientific community like Gina McCarthy and John Kerry.

It is unclear if the people with Biden during the event can be considered close contact under the guidelines and specifications followed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
