The Supreme Court has finally made its decision on whether or not abortion should be banned. The Roe v. Wade decision was one that divided opinion, but this time around there is no doubt about where people stand as the court overturned the rule. Pro-life supporters are cheering while others worldwide expressed their anger on social media.
It’s been a long wait for many Americans who believe in reproductive rights; however, today’s ruling by the highest court will make things much more difficult.
The US Supreme Court’s decision to review and possibly roll back landmark reproductive healthcare legislation is expected change the landscape of America, giving individual states power over abortion policies. This new development will also pave the way for them to pass stricter laws.
State officials revealed that new abortion bans could be enforced on Friday afternoon.
Some companies are promising to foot the travel bill for employees or dependents who want an abortion, as states crack down on women seeking these procedures. The Supreme Court’s decision may soon require people seeking a termination of pregnancy outside their home state–a move which has been widely greeted with anger and resentment from those opposed.
These companies want to make sure their employees are taken care of in times like these.
Apple
An Apple spokesperson shared that their benefits package allows employees to travel out of state for medical care if it is prohibited in the employee’s home state.
Bumble
Bumble, a well-known dating app company, has announced they will be donating money to the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas and Planned Parenthood Federation America and provide support employees’ access to the healthcare services they need, including abortion.
Disney
With the new benefits package, Disney employees are provided with access to affordable medical care that includes family planning and pregnancy-related decisions outside their home states.
Meta
Meta is a company that offers travel expense reimbursement for employees seeking out-of-state health care and reproductive services.
“We are in the process of assessing how best to do so given the legal complexities involved,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.
Microsoft
Microsoft is one of many companies that has extended their financial support for critical healthcare to include travel expenses related with having an abortion or gender-affirming care.
Netflix
Netflix provides a lifetime allowance of $10,000 for its employees and their dependents. The streaming company also offers travel reimbursement to cover the costs incurred when traveling so as to not only provide abortion services but gender-affirming care in states where it is legal or accessible.
Nike
The company has released a statement saying that it will be covering travel and lodging expenses for employees traveling to access healthcare services, which reads:
“No matter where our teammates are on their family planning journey – from contraception and abortion to coverage, to pregnancy and family-building support through fertility, surrogacy, and adoption benefits – we are here to support their decisions.”
